I'd say band, but what is the difference between a band and a group? It gets tricky when it's two people, Thievery Corporation would be a band for me, but Kruder & Dorfmeister not, because they don't (fully) project a collective identity, by using their real names.

A suggestion may be that if you cannot name one of the musicians - or the DJ - that it is not a band.

Simon and Garfunkel never had a band - also would remove the likes of the Everly Brothers and the Righteous Brothers, both mentioned so far. The flip side is it also removes all the singing groups (Temps, Tops, Supremes etc)

No need to over think things, in my opinion. Just include bands, groups and duos. Doesn’t seem right to not include the likes of Simon & Garfunkel and The Supremes in the tournament.

If there's no cut-off date and no restriction on genres then Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys should definitely be in it. Genius song-writing from Hank, the best Country and Western band ever by a mile and playing rock and roll nearly ten years before it was 'invented".
