There's no reason why we couldn't have signed any of their players from the off. Lewandowski was playing in Poland, Hummels was in Bayern's reserves and (I know he plays the Mancs now, but I think it's still valid) Kagawa was in the Japanese second division, for Christ's sake. It's not rocket science, just excellent scouting and superb youth development.

I personally agree with you but doing it this way takes time. And patience. We have signed a promising, young manager and it's taken all of six months for some fans to write him off, if they hadn't done so last May. He clearly needs time. So do young players. They will be inconsistent and, consequently, so will the results.

A lot (some, most, half, whatever) of the fanbase don't have the patience and believe (rightly or wrongly) that because we dominated yesterday, we should be doing the same today. It doesn't work that way for me. The best we can do is give the manager time. Sacking manager after manager is just ridiculous and self defeating. Give him (Rodgers or the next fall guy) enough rope to either hang himself or prove himself.

Can't believe the owners can afford another severance package - they must be feeling pretty hard done by as it is.

Rodgers will see out his contract - or have it honoured, at least. One troubling thing is that although we know they didn't expect CL football next year we don't know how they felt about Europa League football.

That had to be a minimum expectation for Rodgers.

What worries me most is that our manager thought it was an "outstanding performance." If he is prepared to accept that load of shite as being good enough for us then we can forget top four or winning league any time soon.

To be fair to him, that might just be for public consumption. If he really does think that or is telling the players that, I'd be concerned. It also depends what context it was said as we know the press are good at putting soundbites out there to raise eyebrows.

Yeah it was a disgrace but it still doesn't excuse spending what we have badly. Rafas final window he bought a rightback for 18 million and an 18 million pound midfielder. Not many clubs or manager get that type of money for two positions, one was okay the other a pile of wank. Kenny and Commoli other than the Suarez transfer may aswell of set fire to the money and Rodgers last summer should of just took that 26 million and give it to some tramp.

Why do we as a club get it so wrong so often, we can't be cursed. Other managers with smaller budgets and less support from owners and scouting staff seem to spot players and buy well. We seem to sift through wades of shit until we eventually find a nugget of gold, which eventually we have to sell and then sift through more shit. Be nice if we can get some more nuggets of gold before we need to sell. If we keep getting one world class player then having to sell him to buy another one, we are going to be stuck in this shite forever.for fucks sake can someone at the club genuinely do their homework.

I'm of the opinion we've got so much technology and software and shite we use to identify players ie stats and shit that we've lost what smaller clubs have and that's genuine talent spotters with out the need for a book of stats showing why we should sign this player. Downing is a stat buy and he's fucking crap.

Replacing players like Alonso & Hyypia doesn't come cheaply especially when your academy and scouting systems are not up to standard. It becomes impossible when the clubs money is going towards massive interest payments. Where other clubs continued to modernise we struggled to adapt because of boardroom failures. Houllier should have been given a longer break. A good CEO would have seen to that. Benitez was a top class manager but failed in his battle with the 'bosses'. Hodgson was never the right appointment. Dalglish is a proven winner but was never the ideal choice for FSG and never agreed with their 'Moneyball' policy. Downing is a stat buy and he's fucking crap.

In the last decade or so we've signed Alonso, Reina, Mascherano, Torres & Suarez. 5 of the worlds best players to go with the best midfielder of a generation Steven Gerrard. We've made some bargain signings (Agger, Arbeloa, Garcia, Benayoun, Crouch, Sissoko, Skrtel) who have all contributed in some way despite the glass ceiling that is our boardroom and we've signed some real shite, granted. We are a relic, a cash cow for yank business types, 2nd rate in nearly every aspect but supporter expectation remains sky high. Is it any wonder the majority of our signings flatter to deceive? Sign Charlie Adam for 5million and he'll be compared to Xabi Alonso. Spend stupid money on Andy Carroll and ask him to be something he is not. There's no margin for error, the situation doesn't allow for players to be nurtured (Henderson, Lucas, Allen, Sterling, Suso, Shelvey), success has to be immediate. It's a Suarez or bust. Despite our recent fall from grace we cannot sign building blocks. How do you go about changing that?

A good post in full, but I don't follow the above logic. Surely we have to make staged signings? The likes of Henderson and Downing simply have to be good enough to guarantee EL qulaification and knocking on the CL door,no more, then we buy again.

Based on what? Executive suite murmurings?

They have to buy again. Or sell up. They'll know that much, regardless of what you heard from the Fulham kit man.

Their own actions. Sustainabilty and the gulf between us and the Top Four are incompatible.

FSG have enjoyed considerable windfall growth income since they bought us, there is no indication that they will be inclined to squander that for sporting reasons.

I tend to notice murmurations of starlings rather than executive suite murmurings. The Fulham kit man? He suggests Persil;)
