Violence erupts at London derby

Police say hundreds of people have been involved in the violence

A man has been stabbed in the chest during violence involving "hundreds" of fans outside West Ham's Upton Park stadium during a game with Millwall.

Fights broke out at 1915 BST and were still raging more than an hour later. A 44-year-old man was stabbed in nearby Priory Road at about 2025 BST.

A fan told the BBC it was the worst hooliganism he had seen in 30 years.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "It looks like there has been some planned trouble from fans."

He added: "Hundreds of fans are estimated to be involved."

The stab victim is said to be in a stable condition.

One pub reportedly had its windows broken by bricks during running battles across several streets up to half a mile from the stadium.

Five arrests have been confirmed, including one for affray and one for breaching a banning order.

British Transport Police said they heard reports of minor overcrowding at Upton Park Tube station.

BBC radio reporter Ben Jacobs, who is at the stadium, said he had heard a second person had been stabbed, although police said they had no confirmation of this.

Mr Jacobs also said Millwall fans will be kept inside the stadium for 30 minutes after the game.

Describing how the violence erupted, Mr Jacobs said: "The trouble broke out outside the Tube station about 600 yards from the ground.

"There were 500 to 1,000 riot police and Millwall fans managed to break through the divide.

"Bottles were thrown and bricks were as well."

He added: "There has been a bit of trouble inside the ground.

"There was a penalty shout and fans started gesturing and throwing small objects."

'Burly bald man'

Aaron Smith from Hemel Hempstead, who was at the game, said: "I saw one man cornered by at least a dozen Millwall fans before kick-off. Terrifying scenes."

Eyewitness Fergal O'Brien said: "I saw a West Ham fan getting punched in the face by a burly bald man who had a coin between his fists."

Another fan said: "I was in a throng walking up and a group of hooligans came for us.

"The police wanted to help but they were clearly afraid to use force. I am still shaking. I thought I was going to die."

Ben Newton, from Harrow, north London, said his father had been stretchered away after being hit with a dart to the head.

And a Millwall fan told the BBC: "It was like a war zone outside the stadium. There was fighting all round.

"I brought my kids with me tonight and they've seen some violence that is indescribable."

Fucking Nora.

It was always going to be like this, they hate each other so much, can't believe sky never had it on live as the viewing figures would have gone through the roof.

I spoke the other day with a few west ham lads I know, and what they said was going to happen has happened, not rocket science West Ham v Millwall

No. The police have the right to request a game live on tv to be cancelled and I imagine that is what would of happened. All the tv stuff would of got in the way of the police as they stop the fights.

I had the misfortune of being at a cup game at Millwall a few years back and to hear the stuff they were singing about Hillsborough, and then see their liar scum of a Chairman deny it later in the press made me sick. They are a horrible club and the football world would be better without them.

I was at that game and went down flu ridden and have never felt so ill in my life as I had to go down as I had a lad on here's ticket. I have never seen so many ''strangers'' amongst our supporters than I did on the way down there on the Barnes coach either.

Pissed me off that it was our fans that the police gathered in front of during play as well as though we were causing the trouble and I seen a lad (steward I think) get volleyed all the way up and down the top tier of the stand on the right hand side were their fans were.

The Hillsborough shit did happen and that Theo piece of shit chairman and Wise coming out denying it the next day was sickening.

I remember Kevin Muscat nearly slicing Baros in half. Was that twat on a sponsored career-endathon or something. The man was a nutcase who surely wasn't playing with a full deck. easily the dirtiest ''player'' I have ever seen. One despicable piece of vermin that. They had some long throw specialist who was a fucking awful player in Adrian Serioux.

We got kept in for over an hour after the game and their fans were trying to get through the fences at us. When we got out I got on the coach feeling like boiled shite and next thing a halfie got thrown at the window. I got in at 530am in the morning. I thought that was bad I would have hated to see what it was like there in the two seasons they spent in the top flight in 88-89 and 89-90 before they were thankfully relegated never to return when they played at their old ground.

I think Everton have some history with Millwall if I am not mistaken and Everton got them in the FA Cup a couple of years back and drew 0-0 away then the retunr game at Goodison was marred by violence by the Royal Oak (right by where I live in the shadow of Goodison) and I think some of our lads came out to fight with Everton against Millwall obviously because of what happened in 04 when we played them.

What pissed me off after that Millwall game is that our fans gave them the notoriety they thrive on by singing ''We fucking hate Millwall'' at the games in the aftermath of that game in 2004. Don't give the cunts the satisfaction of knowing that they think they got to us.

I was at the old den when we played them in the cup, cant remember the year (mick?),first time we had played them, anyway, what a crew we had and we took the place over, one of my best away days.

89 I think and it was indeed a day out and a half.
It was indeed 88-89 and it was live on the box. We won 0-2. I seem to remember it was one of the easiest away days I've ever had.

2155: West Ham lead 2-1 against Millwall. Jack Collison's cross hits the defender's hand and Junior Stanislas slots in the penalty. The fans flood onto the pitch again - and the players are off. Horrible, horrible scenes at Upton Park. Play is suspended.

Why don't they just ban Millwall from everything?

Fixed.

I was there that day. I think every Liverpool hooligan from the 1960s onwards was there. Lots of old heads came out of retirement for the day.
