If the 4th penalty taker scores this probably comes up.

Salah can't be criticised for "taking" the fifth when Mané went 5th and nailed it. Who us to say one of his teammates wouldn't have bottled if they had to take the pen to win the competition?

Also the player who missed the 4th for Egypt - even more of a chance he misses the 5th, with the added pressure of needing to score to stay in the competition.

Mane went fifth for the team going first. A significant difference, I suggest.

Salah took the 5th penalty vs Ivory Coast and won it for them. Mane took the 5th for Senegal and won it for his country. Going 1st doesn't guarantee anything. And even if you scored the 1st, you still need 3 or 4 other players to score theirs.

Cameroon's first kicker in the semi final was Aboubakar. He is their best taker and had scored 2 penalties earlier in the tournament. He scored his in the semis but that didnt stop the subsequent 3 takers from shitting the bed and losing to Egypt.

Scrappy game with defences on top, as is the way with pretty much every final nowadays.

Sadio didn't let his early penalty miss affect him, but Senegal couldn't string together enough meaningful possession or chances even though they generally dominated territory. Egypt were happy to contain and counter (read: play for penalties) and the more Senegal ran out of ideas, the more it looked possible that Egypt might snatch an undeserved goal. They couldn't get Mo into the game enough and more often than not when he got possession, he was surrounded by Senegal defenders. Koulibaly is a big unit and he can shift too.

Mo never got to take the fifth kick for Egypt because Sadio wrapped up the title just before. Seeing Sadio during the celebrations, there is something incredibly humbling about his attitude. He was quick to console Mo.

If Infantino wanted Paul Biya to hand over the trophy, or rather if Paul Biya had wanted to do so, maybe they should have ensured that the Cameroon president had the accreditation to enter the field of play (all those that took part in the medal ceremony had the official accreditation) so that Koulibaly could properly celebrate with his team. Instead, the whole thing was turned into a shitshow that looked ridiculously awkward.

It guarantees that you get to take a penalty.

So what? It doesnt guarantee you would score or that your other teammates wouldn't shit the bed.

Anyway, extensive research of thousands of penalty shootouts has showed that the 5th kick is harder to score than the 1st kick. So statistically, it makes more sense to have your best kicker on the 5th kick rather than the first.

Salah didn't take one in the last shoot out either, there's probably a statistical reason why he's 4th or 5th choice but I always think it's a bad look when the teams best player is positioned to take the 'winning; penalty instead of leading from the front.

Didn't Portugal go out on pens without Ronaldo taking one recently?

He did indeed. And we all laughed, I suppose some opposing fans will laugh at Mo, but at least another Liverpool player scored the winner!

So what? Having a guaranteed chance to score versus possibly not having a chance to score at all?

Those stats don't show the fifth kick is more difficult to score (if you even have a fifth kick). They show it is less likely you will score from the fifth kick. Which is not the same thing. Indeed, if wisdom suggests keeping the best taker for the fifth kick, why are fewer fifth kicks converted?

Because of the pressure in taking what is a deciding penalty compared to one where four other players will step up after you is massive.
