I would be exceedingly surprised if the global energy crisis was a conspiracy to curb electric vehicles.

Talking about electric vehicles there was a piece on Sky News today about the new Ford eTransit.

They've gone and put the charging socket in the front bumper below the drivers side headlamp/ indicator assembly so when the inevitable white van man shunt happens....

Genius.

It won’t be as bad as people are predicating. They’re doing that thing where they say it ‘could be 6.5 grand a year’ then it’ll be more like 4.5 grand and we’ll accept that and think we’ve got a deal.
Like with diesel, 2 quid a few weeks ago. Now it’s more like 1.75 and nobody is moaning any more as it seems cheaper. Could this all be linked to the increase in electric cars? Losing money from fuel so bang the cost of leccy up.
Cunt country.

That’s not how it works. There’s a published formula for the cap so knowing the price and plugging other variables in spits out the number.  Hence why all the predictions were accurate to within £50.

I read in Private Eye that the ongoing problems with the French nuclear fleet is a big contributing factor to increased energy prices. A lot of generating capacity unexpectedly taken out of the system. These things are more complex than they first appear.

Nuclear plants have most of their planned maintenance in summer, but that’s been compounded by low river levels putting other nuclear plants out of action.  It really is a perfect storm.

I didn’t say it was. I just mean the loss of tax revenue from the sales of diesel / petrol will be significant as electric cars become more and more the norm and they’ll have to make that revenue from somewhere.

Welcome to Philip Schofield’s Wheel Of Poverty. Let the viewing public thrill to poverty porn as Schofield gets desperate people to ring in and debase themselves for the chance of not freezing to death this Winter.

Nezt week, win a week’s worth of food to stave off starvation.

Bust a deal and face the wheel.

Cunt.

I thought the picture in the other thread was fake.

Turns out, I’m not cynical enough.

October's price cap scrapped with new unit charge limited to around £2500 less the £400 handout announced earlier. That results in a small increase on the current £1900+ cap.

Some welcome news as it's lower that the three and a half grand proposed but still means an average of £175 a month on the £2500

They really need to get the message out that the cap is on the price per kWh and not total

bills. Then hammer the message that the best way to save is to use less.

Forcing the generators to then invest profits in insulation and green initiatives over the medium term

Nuclear in the long term

Dyson spheres in the slightly longer term.

Not a dig at you but I despise the word handout.

Benefits aren't handouts as people pay into the system for when they need it, help with energy bills aren't handouts, they're taxpayer funded - and we're taxpayers - and a way of avoiding financial Armageddon which will take the whole shooting match down, it's not being done out of the government's altruistic concern for its citizens.

I'll tell you what's a handout. Giving a contract for PPE to a Tory dame who makes underwear, or Liz Truss claiming her Amazon Prime subscription on MPs' expenses.

Need to see the detail but I don’t understand why this huge level of support isn’t targeting consumers on low incomes rather than propping up suppliers. It’s massively regressive as people in big energy consuming houses will benefit more than people on lower incomes living in flats.

That’s what a cap does.

Yes but this was a chance to change that to make it more progressive. Instead it’s a £140 billion debt and a big chunk of that goes straight to generators with fixed costs such as wind, solar and nuclear who were already profitable when wholesale electricity prices were £85 per MWhr. I think it’s a panic job, rushed through without any thought or nuance. Eat out to help out was the same but only cost £10 billion.

They've only had the best part of a year to decide what to do though, it's a bit unfair to expect anything well thought out.

You really think Truss has been thinking about anything other than her Prom Queen moment?

Yeah it really shows up the Tories for what they really are when they double down on the poorest for 'handouts' whilst at the same time individually taking six figure expenses annually from the state. Amazon Prime subs through to paying the heating bill for their stables included.

Spot on, it's exactly that for her. She will be hoping the queen dies while she's still in power so she can be prominent at the funeral.

I don’t think there was any plan to change the cap, I’ve not seen anything but may have missed it.
