Fair enough that, Paul. I used to stick up for Migs (even though I didn't want him and wanted - fuck, still want - Begovic), but the lack of command, voice, authority, strength, positioning, handling, etc, just isn't made up for by occasional very good saves. The way I look at it, we've got a very serious problem with our spine. We need players running through the middle. He, along with a CB and a CM would go a really, really long way into turning us into title contenders.

We need more than a centre back,a defensive midfielder,we need cover for them too as we cant absorb losing key players(see Mane) in the way our rivals can. This is because of serial lack of investment in players that leaves us hoping for just one of the 4 or 5 that we actually need. This Summer should have been the time for investment and subsequently we could have eased out the deadwood. Now we are in danger each transfer window of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Can’t argue with that. The need for VVD is glaring. I think Keita will add a huge amount too. I also think there’s an argument for a centre forward who is a more prolific version of Firmino.

As for back ups, I think there’s a limit to how much any club can do, no matter what their stature. Getting VVD in Jan would be a fucking start though.

I think we should just accept that we need two first choice CBs and if we can't get VVD in Jan (which must be a strong possibility) look to buy someone else and then buy VVD in the summer. May as well start investing the inevitable Coutinho cash in the areas we most need it when we most need it. Because if we don't finish top four as a result of our dodgy defence we'll have the usual recruitment problems and VVD may be off elsewhere (particularly if his rumoured release clause is limited to clubs in CL).

Centre halves needed=VVD+another,central midfield=Keita+another,strikers=another,GK=another.

VVD and Keita will help but they are not the solution by themselves. They are part of the solution and teams on the up invest in players rather than stand still. The jury is still out on if Salah and Chamberlain constitutes investment or more of a standstill.
