Can Cole and Aquilani make an impact under the new boss?

I'd welcome Aquilani back. I think he'd comfortably be the third best midfielder here and a level above our other choices not named Lucas or Gerrard. I'm not keen on Gerrard in the middle, anyway, I think he's put to better use as a forward and having someone like Aquilani back there would presumably mean we wouldn't have to worry about that anymore.

Wonder if it's worth offering Milan a swap deal for Flamini for the season.

I've wanted us to sign Flamini for about 3 years, think I read he signed a new contract the other week though which I found strange seeing as he never seems to play regularly, was injured all this season though

Find it hard to believe Lille made any kind of an offer for him, or that we'd turn down ANY offer that takes him off our books.

I can't imagine they were paying more than a fraction of his salary last season anyway.

Financially our best hope might be getting the porn barons to pay half of his wages and have him at West Ham on loan.

What's the point in bringing Aquilani back for pre-season? Two managers have looked at him and on both viewings, they loaned him out. Would Rodgers need to look at him again to assess whether Aquilani fits his system? He's not fast, doesn't track back, but knows how to pass a ball. What else does he need to see?

I suppose it creates the impression we're willing to keep him rather than being desperate for someone to take him off our hands. It might gain us an extra few quid, but i doubt it, Milan already know the situation and it doesn't look like clubs are falling over themselves to snap him up.

That's about the size of it, it just goes to show that putting players on excessive salaries can be just as costly, if not more so, as high transfer fees.

From their point of view, why would they take a pay cut just to make a transfer permanent when they know they can be loaned out and receive the same wage? Between the pair of them we'll probably get a couple of million max after Cole gets a payoff, but that's it.

I suspect Kuyt will be followed out the door by Maxi, Cole, Wilson and Darby as I don't think they possess the mobility and/or ability to excel in the style of football that Rodgers favours.

We appear to be making overtures to Gylfi Sigurdsson and, if this transfer goes through, I think that Charlie Adam will join the exodus as we already have Gerrard, Shelvey and Henderson who can cover this area.

The two exiles who I feel could still have a role to play are Aquilani and Pacheco as both have good technical ability. However, neither of them have shown that they have the necessary mentality or consistency to command a place in our team . If they excel in pre-season and show they have the desire to play for LFC they may be able to convince our new manager that they deserve a fresh chance. Personally, I think this is very unlikely and I can see them both being loaned / sold late in the Summer.

Getting rid of the above players would knock around £17 -20m off our annual wage bill without adversely affecting our squad. Even if we have to make a few partial payoffs and accept low fees to clear these players off our books, it would still free up a massive amount in wages and make up a lot of the shortfall caused by our failure to secure Champions League football. It will be a mammoth task to dispose of all of the deadweight but it is a key step if we are going to progress.
