When does the away goals rule come into play?

If teams are level on Goals after normal time, the away goal rule is applied

If both teams are level at this point then its extra time and Pens is how i understand it

Yer. If Barca win (after 90 mins) 2-1 then it goes to extra time.

If they win 2-1 after 90 then its extra time (1-0 they're out, 3-2 they're through), if they win 3-2 after extra time they're through

Don't think that's right. I'm sure an even number of goals after normal time means extra time - irrespective of who has the most away goals.

If after extra time they still have an equal number of goals, then whoever has the most away goals will win.

Mind you, I could be wrong. :dunno:

Knock-out rounds

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knock-out stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals. If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knock-out round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

Just to simplify, I hope!

2-1 to Barca on the night at 90 mins is the only score that can take the tie into extra time.

If extra time remains goalless, ie still 2-1 to Barca then its penalties.

If they get more than 2 goals before 90 mins then basically we have to outscore them or score draw with them.

This scenario would also apply once extra time has started.

Fuck, it sounded simpler before writing it down!!!!
