His passes are awkwardly weighted (could almost accuse him of being clumsy), but other than that he looks quite promising. He seems to enjoy the physical side of the game which is refreshing after the debacle that was Nuri Sahin, the last German-Turk we had. The holding midfielder who couldn't defend.

That's probably because Sahin was never and has been a holding midfielder.

For me Can is your classic box to box man.  The waters have been muddied a bit because of just how good Gerrard was at it, in terms of the sheer number of game saving tackles at one end and match winning goals at the other that he did on a consistent basis.  He sort of changed the standard of what it was to be a box to box player, or at least what people expected.  It was at the same time lots of managers started favouring specialised midfield players.  The classic box to box man seemed to die out a bit because of it and there doesn't seem to be a place for them in today's game in a lot of manager's eyes.  I think that people have forgotten it's still quite valuable if you have a good box to box midfielder even if they aren't anywhere near as prolific as Gerrard was in his peak years.

There are a few knocking about still.  Diame and Khedira spring to mind as does our Hendo.

How do you quantify potential?

Not sure there's an exact science to it. Although, Khedira when fit, starts for Madrid (the biggest club in the world) and Germany (the best national team in the world). Can probably won't get near it. I'm all for supporting our players, etc but shit like this gotta stop.

Sure, if you discount Vidal, Pogba, Schweinsteiger, Ramsay, Ramires, Yaya Toure, etc.

I'm not saying there aren't any or Diame , Kheidira and Henderson are the only 3.  I'm saying there are a lot less than there used to be because a lot of teams play with set defensive midfielders so the other midfielders don't need to be box to box in the old sense of the term.  I can't speak for Vidal and Pogba as I don't watch Italian football.  I'm probably getting picky but Schweinsteiger isn't.  I wouldn't class Ramsay or Ramires either.  They can all play a number of roles at different points in the game.  They aren't tasked with going box to box though from the off though and you will rarely see them do it over the course of a game like you used to see.

Even Toure who quite clearly has the ability to do it isn't tasked with it often.  He's either positioned deep or far forward, he isn't going box to box the majority of a game.

Agree people need to calm down with the hype, People are mentioning this kid with the likes of Champions league and World Cup winning players and some of the most sought after and rated midfielders like Vidal and Pogba and erm some oaf named Diame.

Saying that we do actually need him to be good as we need the right balance in midfield. So if not he could be high on the escapegoat list. But a bit behind Lambert who has gone from an inspired Gary Mc signing to Andy carrolls slower older brother in the eyes of some. I also have my eye on Lovren and Markovic for the escapegoat list as the later has been overhyped "as could be as good as Ronaldo".  No pressure then for the newbies.
