Am I alone in thinking that moving Gerrard out right has allowed Xabi to play his more natural game and run the midfield? In the last two games Alonso has been outstanding, and I don't think it's any coincidence that SG isn't in the middle. The team certainly has looked more balanced, but I think one striker from Crouch/Moro, and one from Cisse/Garcia would make for a more effective front pairing. It would also leave the left wing free for Kewell or Zenden.

Xabi Alonso has committed himself to Liverpool after a turbulent summer and the Spaniard feels The Reds have never had a better chance of winning the Premier League title. The European champion was strongly linked Juventus and Arsenal in the summer, having seemingly been deemed surplus to requirements as Rafa Benitez went in pursuit of Gareth Barry. Barry proved elusive and as such Alonso remained on Merseyside – much to the relief of the Anfield faithful. Alonso is a firm favourite of the Liverpool faithful and he is looking forward to pushing for the title. “At some stage my future was not clear, I was wondering what was going to happen because there…

Sorry, I meant Xavi.... Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has revealed that he spoke to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho before agreeing a new deal with the Primera Liga champions. The 25-year-old was a key player in the Blaugrana's championship winning side last season and was linked to a move to Stamford Bridge before agreeing a contract extension until 2010 at the Nou Camp. However, Xavi claims to have received no formal offer from the West London club. "I knew nothing of an offer, just that there was contact between Ivan (Corretja, Xavi's agent) but nothing like what was built up in the press," Xavi told El Mundo Deportivo. "I did speak several times wit…

Xabi Alonso has established himself as one of the mainstays in our midfield and has superb vision and an exceptional range of passing, but is he better suited to playing in Europe rather than in the Premiership and does he have a long-term future at Anfield? I rate Alonso very highly and admire his wide range of passing ability and deft touches, but I am beginning to wonder if to challenge for the title we would be better off pushing Gerrard back into central midfield alongside Mascherano or even trying to sign a powerhouse midfielder like a Michael Essien or a Patrick Vieira . Jamie Carragher is on record as saying that perhaps we lack players with pace and powe…

I see there are plenty of threads about him, but i just wanted to say that he's possibly my favourite player out with Celtic. I also hope he stays at Liverpool for the foreseeable future...

I first went to Anfield when i was 6 with my brother who was 11 years older than me, he was 17. Now i'm 43 and hes 54. Anybody who can have a dig at Xabi Alonso doesn't know football because all that time we've supported the reds in our opinion he's one of the best midfeilders to wear a liverpool shirt. How anybody can have a dig at the Xabi is beyond my comprhension. He tracks back, he goes up for headers, he tackles and he reads the game better than the many liverpool midfeilders past and present could ever dream of. In fact my brother was at the battle of Tournias on the way back from rome in 77' and think how better he would of been in those days.

Can we all take a moment to "Basque" in the glory of having this lad wearing our number 14? I always loved Xabi because of the fact he's a real old fashioned footballer. He has no pace and yet is regarded as one of the finest midfielders in Europe today. He's added a new dimension to his game this year, a beard, which has given him a mean edge and allows him to fucking destroy players in the middle. In my eyes Alonso is the only real pure footballer we have at the club and I fucking love him.

For anyone that didn't get to see this game today ,I'd seriously recommend gettin yer hands on the video from today - absoloutly breathtaking he was .He sprayed balls left right and centre. Johnny Giles and Ray Houghton were nearly whackin off they were so impressed with him .Its simply near unbelievabvle to think that he's been missing 4 months ,he completly dominated the game .There was one ball in the first half he played to Garcia which was like watchin Molby in his heyday- no t surpringly,he tired with 15 mins to go but still one hell of a performance If todays game gives a insight into future rafa teams ,Every one of us will be happy -

No, this is not a thread about him coming back. We should all know by now that's never going to happen. This is a thread to simply appreciate his genius, since I couldn't find a thread about him already (did I just miss it somehow?). I was prompted to post it when I saw this particular bit of brilliance from the bearded wonder:

Awesome display yesterday. He is my favourite player but I have said before I find it hard to see him and Gerrard as a partnership unless Xabi can be successful as a holding midfielder. He certainly seems to have got 'harder' this season and definitely stronger in the tackle. Long may it continue and maybe we will have the best central midfield in Europe before long!

From the BBC gossip column: Classic film nights hosted by Liverpool's Xabi Alonso and attended by several Anfield stars at the midfielder's luxury pad have been attributed as the reason behind the side's team spirit. (The S*n) You can't take anything that rag says seriously, but if true, What a guy.

How good was that performance after four months out? Unbelievable. We literally didn't miss Gerrard tonight. Igor was magnificent too. What a fuckin' night.

He has finally received the greatest of accolades in having a recipe named after him. A shoulder of pork, to be precise. I was watching the telly the other day when this came on. It doesn't matter if you don't speak Spanish, the chef is basically banging on about how great Anfield and Liverpool are. It's absolutely brilliant how highly thought of we are in Spain. Probably one of the finest first seasons by a foreign player in the premiership from our Xabi. One of the greatest passers of the ball in the game at the minute and also seemingly one of the most down to earth players around. I have to admit though, I wasn't truly sold on him last year as I thought for his position he had a lot of things missing such as aggression and work rate. His passing couldn't be questioned last year but the start of this season looked like he might have been a one season wonder as his early season form was shite - to be honest. Ecstatic to say though that not only has he rediscovered his passing game but the parts of his game that I thoug…

This Barry madness needs to end right away. Xabi is a world class player while Barry is a little more than an average English player. Selling Xabi would be complete madness.
