In last night’s other game, Blackburn won 1-0 at Blackpool :

Rhys Williams played the full game and wasn’t the only one to blame for the goal, a straight through ball between the centre-backs to Benjamón Breretón de Dias.

Tyler Morton also got 90 minutes as a deep-lying midfielder; also added a bit of getting forward, had one shot in the first half that went close to troubling the crossbar.

Weekend mega-round-up

Rhys Williams : Played an hour in a back five in the controversial 1-0 win for Blackpool over Huddersfield; would have been at fault when the home team appeared to scramble the ball over the line, had the technology told the ref to give a goal.

Sepp van den Berg : 90 minutes on his Schalke debut as they drew 1-1 at Stuttgart. At fault for the opening goal when he lets a long ball just bounce off him.

Leighton Clarkson : Played 65 minutes as Aberdeen drew 1-1 at Ross County. Didnt have any opportunities to shoot from long-range, got kicked quite a bit and was unlucky to get booked for being only a bit late in a tackle.

Billy Koumetio : Started in the 2-2 for Austria Wien against Lustenau but came off with a knock at halftime.

Adam Lewis : Unavailable for Newport, “ill”.

Paul Glatzel : Not involved for Tranmere at table-topping Orient.

Fidel O’Rourke :  Not registered in time to be involved in Friday’s win for Caernarfon over Airbus.

Vitezslav Jaros : Faultless again between the sticks for Stockport as they overcame Wimbledon 1-0.

Anderson Arroyo : 90 minutes at right-back for Alavés in their top-of-the-table 1-1 draw with Las Palmas.

Jack Bearne : Unused substitute for Kidderminster as they beat Spennymoor 4-1 at home.

Max Woltman : Unused substitute as Doncaster lost 3-1 at home to fucking Mansfield. Richie Wellens still up for League Two Manager Of The Month, though.

Tyler Morton : Played the full game in midfield as Blackburn lost 3-1 to Bristol City.

Jakub Ojrzynski : Unused substitute for Radomiak as they pluckily struggled to a 1-0 defeat at Legia Warsaw.

James Balagizi : Played virtually the whole game for Crawley in their 2-2 (subbed off in stoppage time). Not directly involved in their goals but apparently still a decent performance.

Conor Bradley : Another productive display at wing-back in the 3-1 win against Charlton, getting in at the back post for a tap-in to equalise after Bolton went behind early, then setting up veteran Kieran Lee for the second. (Owen Beck not yet available while the League wait for FIFA clearance.)

Marcelo Pitaluga : As far as I can tell, the first time any of our loan players have taken the field at West Didsbury & Chorlton, where the Brazilian denied all comers to ensure a 1-0 win for Macclesfield in the FA Cup First Round (Qualifying). Sheepshead Dynamo or Coalville Town (depending on the result of tonight’s replay - the qualifying rounds have replays!) await in the next round.

Middling interregnum update :-

Marcelo Pitaluga : In-and-out for the Brazilian, as Macclesfield suffered their first loss in the league, 1-0 at Witton Albion, before having a quiet evening in the FA Trophy as they beat Tadcaster 7-0, and then being on the wrong end of a late winner in the FA Cup at Coalville, despite earlier saving a penalty. Them's the vagaries.

Sepp van den Berg : Two more Bundesliga games for Schalke, firstly in their first win of the season at home to struggling Bochum; partly at fault for the visitors equaliser as he was beaten by a straight ball before a cross to the back post. Later had a shot on target after a set-piece - could have done better, but the goal-line clearance led to a free-kick, from which Schalke scored their crucial second goal. Solid but unspectacular in the Derby defeat at Dortmund, where the only goal of the game wasn't his fault (he took the near-post runner, the cross goes to the back post, where his two teammates are outjumped by the goalscorer).

Rhys Williams : Not going well at Blackpool; subbed off in the 3-0 defeat at Rotherham as the experiment of three at the back is abandoned mid-match. Dropped to the bench for the defeat at Millwall. Tangerines are now 19th, just below Cardiff, who sacked their manager this week.

Leighton Clarkson : Missed the defeat at Hibs with a knock.

Billy Koumetio : Has not played in the last fortnight, unused sub in the Europa games against Beer Sheva and Lech Poznan, and the league win at Hartberg before being absent from the squad in the league win over Ried. Oh dear. Oh my. Never mind.

Adam Lewis : Fifteen minutes off the bench in the loss to Stevenage, a full 90 in the defeat by Barrow, not used in the Pizzaland Trophy defeat by Forest Green. Probably a new manager at Newport soon, allegedly.

Paul Glatzel : His injury nightmare continues; his seasonal debut, from the bench against Bradford, lasts only fourteen minutes before he suffers another hamstring strain.

Vitezslav Jaros : Not that bad a game against Crawley, considering they put three past him, then untroubled by fellow strugglers Harrogate in the scoreless draw.

Anderson Arroyo : Unused sub in the last two league games, both 2-1 wins; Alaves are now top of the Second Division after six games.

Fidel O'Rourke : Finally got to make his Caernarfon debut on Saturday at home to Haverfordwest, and took just five minutes to open his account, losing his marker at a corner to volley home from six yards out. Caernarfon won 2-1 and go second.

Jack Bearne : Yet to make his debut for Kidderminster.

Owen Beck : Has actually got on the field for Bolton, in the EFL Trophy, where he played the first hour against Tranmere.

Tyler Morton : Now a regular in the midfield for Blackburn, solid but unspectacular in the home win over Watford, before playing 70 minutes in the defeat at Luton. Now away with England Under-21s.

Jakub Ojrzynski : Unused substitute in the two league games played by Radomiak.

Conor Bradley : Regular starter for Bolton, played the full games in the wins over MK and Peterborough; still playing as far forward as he likes while nominally a wing-back.

James Balagizi : Played the full 90 twice as Crawley overcame Stockport 3-2, then lost at Crewe. Away in Spain with the England Under-(insert number) squad.

Max Woltman : Two substitute appearances in the league defeats at Barrow and at home to Swindon. Ineligible for the EFL Trophy game (cup-tied - what a quaint notion!).

No disrespect to you, alles, but what a thoroughly depressing read. Is Coalville an actual place ?

It's in Leicestershire - they had coal mining right up until The Strike - the former colliery is now a Morrison's. Birthplace of Steve Whitworth (that's enough depressing people - Depression Editor).

Coalville (and Barwell) are the highest ranked teams in Leicestershire (Step 3). Shepshed play a step lower and lost to Harborough Town (my team) in FA Trophy on satdee.

Experience at that level may "toughen" them up but not test them footy wise if they have ambitions of playing for Liverpool.

How many of these loaners are going to be Liverpool players when they grow up?

My (pretty uninformed) guess is that, maybe, Pitaluga, van den Berg, Bradley and Morton might get some games (or appearances on the bench, at least). Any others?

All three of the keepers are much of a muchness, Beck isn't far behind the other players you mention, the coaching staff will give Koumetio every opportunity he deserves (and then some) and Balagizi could still be anything. Some of the others are the wrong size or shape for 21st century top-level football, and some aren't going to grow any more than they already have, and that happens. (Resists temptation to use quote about korfball because the number of people who would need it explained dwarfs the number of people who wouldn't.)

International break action :

Marcelo Pitaluga : Games thick and fast at Macclesfield, with a 5-1 FA Trophy win over the might of Widnes followed by another NPL clean sheet in the 5-0 triumph over Kidsgrove Athletic. At this rate there’s not going to be much drama for the Robbie Savage panto/ documentary. Not our problem, though.

Adam Lewis : 90 minutes at left-back in the 1-1 draw with Carlisle - not at fault for the equaliser as former LFC defender Cory Whelan poked in a loose ball after a corner.

Sepp van den Berg : Two calm error-free displays for Netherlands Under-21s in a win over Belgium and a scoreless draw against Romania.

Vitezslav Jaros : Away with the Under-21s, didn’t play.

Tyler Morton : Away with the Under-21s, didn’t play.

James Balagizi : Away with England Under-20s, did play (a bit); two substitute appearances against Chile and Australia in games that were already won when he got on, either side of a start against Morocco (played 70 minutes).

Conor Bradley : Two games for Northern Ireland, a good 90 minutes against Kosovo (see above, cheers to @The Golden Eel ) and a less good hour against Greece that mattered less.

Anderson Arroyo : Unused sub for Alavés at Cartagena. They’re only behind Las Palmas on goal difference at the top of La Segunda, so not much incentive to change the team at the moment.

Fidel O’Rourke : Played 90 minutes away to Clyde in the Scottish Challenge Cup (the Scots version of the Checkatrade includes invited clubs from Wales and Northern Ireland - every day’s a school day) in an unlucky 1-0 defeat, then came on from the bench midweek in the 2-0 league defeat by Connah’s Quay.

Max Woltman : Another late sub appearance in the 4-1 win over Balagizi-less Crawley.

Owen Beck : Got a much-needed extended run-out for Wales Under-21s in their 2-0 defeat by Austria.

Jakub Ojrzynski : After playing in a fund-raising friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk, got the nod for the league game Friday night against Cracovia; ended in a 2-0 defeat that was partly down to the red card for one of his defenders. Sometimes when opportunity knocks, someone else knocks you down.

Lost weekend highlights:

Marcelo Pitaluga : On the wrong end of the first league defeat of the season, inflicted by the might of (checks notes) Bootle FC, 2-1. Still top of the league. I’m sure they didn’t do it on purpose.

Sepp van den Berg : Suffered a horrible-looking ankle injury in Schalke’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg. The consensus in the German media : “Likely to be out for a long time, after Xmas at least.”

Vitezslav Jaros : Back to league action in Stockport’s 1-1 draw with Walsall; could have done better with the late equaliser.

Leighton Clarkson : Suspended after his yellow card against Ross County was upgraded to a red by a disciplinary committee, adjudged as meriting a two-game ban, the first of which was served before the international break (in a game Clarkson would have missed through injury). It fucking never was. Anyway, the Dons beat Kilmarnock 4-1.

Fidel O’Rourke : Started for Caernarfon in their defeat by Pontypridd, went off injured after just 18 minutes. Maybe he’s used up his good luck for the year.

Conor Bradley : Back to league action with Bolton, another 90 minutes on the right flank in the 2-0 win over Lincoln.

Adam Lewis : Newport went to a back five for their daunting trip to top-of-the-table Swindon, with Lewis at left wing-back. The switch resulted in their best performance of the season, a 2-1 win, and Lewis started it with his inswinging corner that created the opening goal.

Tyler Morton : Outstanding performance in the 2-1 win over Millwall at Ewood Park. It started with a defensive block in his own area, after an extended period of fucking about at the back gave Benik Afobe a clear sight of goal. Then a glorious Thiagoesque 40-yard pass with the outside of his foot sent Sam Gallagher away for the move that ended with the opening goal. After that his inswinging corner led to Brereton-Diaz heading home to clinch the points.

Midweek misery :

Conor Bradley : ‘Rested’ for Bolton’s surprise defeat at Cheltenham (Owen Beck was an unused substitute); manager Ian Evatt, when questioned, pointed out that ‘they aren’t machines, you know’ and at no point attempted to imply that anyone at LFC had requested it. Wouldn’t surprise me if we had, though.

Adam Lewis : Played another full 90 at left wing-back for Newport, who couldn’t follow up their win at Leyton Orient with another at Swindon. Rochdale at home next, though, might not be as demanding a proposition.

Tyler Morton : Came off the bench in Blackburn’s unexpected 1-0 at Cardiff, in a way that suggested some sort of rotation. Wasn’t as involved as usual in the middle of the park, but still could easily have had an assist in the last five minutes with a defence-splitting ball to Bradley Dack.

James Balagizi : Returned to Kirkby from Crawley midweek for ‘assessment of an injury’. That ain’t good.

Multimedia infotainment:

Marcelo Pitaluga : Another FA Trophy game, another win for Macclesfield, as Bamber Bridge were swept aside 6-1 in Cheshire. Next round sees a home game against Guiseley, with the Silkmen now just six games from Wembley. Yes, these are all real places.

Leighton Clarkson : Returned from suspension/injury for the trip to bottom-of-the table Dundee United, which didn’t go to plan at all, as the embattled Tangerines took a two-goal lead before Clarkson was subbed on. He was arguably the most effective player for the visitors, creating two clear chances for Miovski that were squandered before United added two more goals.

Max Woltman : Started on Doncaster’s bench in their game against Leyton Orient; came on at half-time as part of a triple change, on account of being 1-0 down; started the move that led to the equaliser; won the fan vote for man-of-the-match on the club Twitter account. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Adam Lewis : Another start at wing-back in Newport’s game against hapless Rochdale; subbed off at half-time in a tactical switch as the team in 92nd place ran out 1-0 winners. The club, as foreshadowed on this thread once or twice, are now looking for a new manager.

Vitezslav Jaros : Back to form in Stockport’s 1-0 win at Bradford City, largely untroubled as the home team managed just one shot on target.

Conor Bradley : Played 78 minutes for Bolton at Forest Green, as Wanderers lost 1-0 for the second time in four days, despite having 67% possession, following the defeat at Cheltenham. Just as well they don’t have to go to Gloucestershire again this season.

Fidel O’Rourke : Returned to start the Welsh Cup 2nd Round game at Flint Mountain F.C.; played the full ninety minutes as Caernarfon won 4-0, opening the scoring with this brave piece of play :-

Tyler Morton : Another great performance as Blackburn saw off Rotherham 3-0 at Ewood Park, which Morton sparked by winning a penalty in the first half when his run into the box was halted by an elbow to the throat. Ben Brereton converted it, and the result wasn’t in doubt after that. Some highlights :-

Of the ten games between tomorrow and the World Cup, the one against Derby County reserves is not the one that worries me the most…

Sure, but the squad is so depleted that these guys would be nailed on starters in games like that, as well as getting minutes in other game to rest our limited and weary regulars.  I wouldn’t mind having Morton on the bench instead of Milner being the only midfield option. And it’s not about hindsight, as we all saw this midfield crisis coming.

Ups and downs

Leighton Clarkson : Back in the starting lineup in midfield for Aberdeen against Hearts. Played 70 minutes. Didn’t see a lot of the ball in a game where both teams were happy to bypass midfield. Came off at 0-0, Aberdeen scored almost immediately and his replacement made it 2-0 after that. You can’t be the hero every week.

Marcelo Pitaluga : Macclesfield continue on their dominating way, beating Glossop 2-1 on Saturday; not the best performance by the Brazilian, but he got bailed out by Neil Danns, and the three-point lead over Prescot Cables was preserved. You can’t be the hero every week.

James Balagizi : Confirmed to be out indefinitely after groin surgery (https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/james-balagizi-undergoes-successful-surgery)

Anderson Arroyo : Returned to the lineup for Alavés against Albacete in the disappointing 0-0 draw last Tuesday, and kept his place for the trip to Andorra at the weekend, where the visitors scraped a 1-0 win. Alavés back up to second, just a point behind Las Palmas.

Conor Bradley : Another 90 minutes for Bolton against Barnsley in the 0-0 draw; picked up a late booking, his fifth of the season, meaning he misses the next match. Still won the Twitter MOTM vote. You can’t be the hero every week.

Max Woltman : Got a start in Doncaster’s trip to Carlisle which ended in a 3-0 defeat; subbed off after an hour. The problems were mostly at the other end of the pitch. Manager Gary McSheffery was sacked yesterday, which is never a good thing for loan players.

Rhys Williams : Brought on as a substitute by Blackpool in their frankly demented game at Sheff U. in the 82nd minute after the Tangerines, leading 3-2 at the time, were reduced to nine men after two players got their second yellow card late on. Wasn’t able to stop the long-range shot that went through a crowd of players to make the score 3-3 in the eight minute of stoppage time. Also wasn’t involved in the extended handbags after the final whistle that resulted in two more red cards.

Billy Koumetio : Having not played for more than a month, was given a chance to turn out for Austria Wien 2nd XI, who play in the Austrian second division against grown men, at First Vienna. 90 minutes and a clean sheet. For the record, First are currently third, and they have only conceded seven goals in twelve games.

Vitezslav Jaros : Not the best game in the 3-0 defeat for Stockport at home to Grimsby. In his defence, the first two goals both involved Jaros saving the first opportunity but then not being able to get back up to stop unmarked attackers converting the rebound. You can’t be the hero every week.

Jack Bearne : Finally made his debut for Kidderminster in their FA Cup qualifying round tie at home to Fylde. Involved in the short corner move that created Harriers first goal. Went off after 70 minutes with the score 2-1  - it finished 2-2, replay is tonight.

Tyler Morton : Another quality performance in the Blackburn midfield in their 2-1 win at crisis club Middlesbrough. Put in the corner that led to Sam Gallagher making it 2-0, then unlucky not to get an assist when Gallagher’s header from his free kick was clawed away by Zak Steffen. Picked up a booking, but you need a bit of that.

Fidel O’Rourke : Completed another 90 minutes in Caernarfon’s 2-0 win over Flint, opening the scoring in the last ten minutes of the game with an assured finish, running onto a loose ball after the opposition keeper pushed a cross away. Should also have had a penalty in the first half when getting to a loose ball fractionally earlier than the defender, but the assistant (directly in line with a clear view) gave nothing. See, it DOES happen even with professional officials.
