Saw that article in the Athletic this morning. Apparently he's had things he wanted to say about his tenure but just couldn't quite find the right time. Now his successor is under real pressure for the first time and he's suddenly found the right time and he's out to correct the record.

I think you're spot on with what his intentions were, but I read the quotes in the article yesterday and I thought it made him sound weaker and look like a worse coach, rather than anything else. He said signing Ronaldo was something they couldn't pass up and it was brilliant at first - before then going onto complain about players not giving enough and being petulant and refusing to be captain, as if those things aren't linked. 

 

He's a shithouse, yes, but first and foremost he's an absolutely abysmal football coach, man manager and figurehead. That shouldn't be forgotten.

There was one line about being offered other jobs and he said something like as a former manager of Manchester United you have to have very high standards going forward . 
 

This instilled arrogant belief  sums him up and the deep rooted issues the club has, the way they define themselves is exactly why they are stuck- and long may it continue.
