Report: Liverpool look to reward Fabinho with new contract

Liverpool are very keen to extend the contract of Fabinho according to reports.

The Brazilian midfielder has turned into a ‘Mr Fixit’ after seamlessly dropping back into a central defensive role courtesy of the season ending injuries to Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

The 27 year-old has overcome a injury of his own after straining a hamstring against  Midtjylland in the Champions League.

Not including that fixture where he was substituted after just 30 minutes, Fabinho’s record at the heart of defence has been very impressive with the Reds having conceded just two goals in six games (Four league games/two in Europe) and compiling five wins and one draw from those fixtures.

The ability of Fabinho to read the play and stop attacking thrusts from the opposition has been displayed many times as a Defensive midfielder and he has taken those instincts with him as a Centre-Back when partnering Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips.

The Guardian reports that his level of professionalism and adaptability has greatly impressed the club hierarchy who are very keen to reward Fabinho with a pay rise.

The report states the former Monaco man is deemed by the club as one of the ‘untouchables’ and they want to lock away until 2026.

His current deal runs out in 2023 (worth £100,000 per week), but with this proposed new deal he will move towards the group of players just underneath the top earners.

Locking away Gini Wijnaldum is a more pressing need at this point of time, and this report also says that the club want to resume contract talks in the next few weeks.

Wijnaldum has been heavily linked to Barcelona, and after his outstanding performance against Wolves gave a typically cagey response:

"I already said in my previous interview, I don’t talk about my contract situation, I talk about the game.

Wijnaldum is one of Jurgen Klopp’s most trusted players and speaking after the win, the manager was in no doubt in what he wanted to see occur.

“I hope so [that he signs], to be honest. You can see that, he plays all the time. We have a pretty good relationship. I hope so."

If we do want serious talks with Gini we should be doing it now rather than "in a few weeks" when he'll be getting plenty of other offers.

I’ve never really understood this bollocks. Why does this shit need to drag on for so long? It’s a 20 minute discussion, at fucking most. ‘Gini, I’ve tippex’d out the numbers and date on your old contract, write in the number you want and we are done’.

I think agents are the problem in these situations. The bigger the transfer fee or contract extension, the bigger their fee. I'd have sympathy for any club dealing with those fuckers but again it's their own fault for dealing with them.

Well, that’s the modern game isn’t it. It’s all part of it. I think it would be a poor decision on just about any level to let Gini go. The fee plus wages of anybody fit to lace his boots will be more than Gini’s wages and there’s the risk they won’t work. Only if the manager wants to get a specific player in and can’t do it without making room in the squad does it make sense to get rid.

re: Gini I think the club are up against it here - they can't make him the highest paid in the side, say 220k a week and that is easily what he will make if he goes to Spain. That is before he tacks on a signing fee - so like another 20 or mil.

I would point him in the direction of this

and slap an offer of 180k a week, four years on the table while having Van Dijk whisper "pretty please" into his ear.

Can Barca still afford to give him that much money ? They are broke at the moment.

I blame clubs for this problem.

Players got stiffed for decades. And no surprise, as you had working class guys who were expected to negotiate with clubs’ senior board members who had years of business experience, in pre-Bosman times when all the leverage lay with the clubs, players regularly got a raw deal (and that’s to say nothing of the maximum wage). So the worm turned, and now (elite) players hold all the chips.

Obviously the Bosman ruling was the epitome of that, as he was out of contract, and instead of being able to leave for a fair fee the club refused to let him go and cut his wages by 75%. No wonder he took them to court.
