He'll be a shot on the arm for them initially, but how long can that last?

Eventually, the quality on the pitch will show (or not), and United are simply lacking.

So, he'll have a tidy sum to spend on transfers, but he still has to persuade them to come, and then they have have to settle quickly.

The pressure will be absolutely enormous. They have to get back in CL and that will not be easy next year. There's simply too many other good teams about. Mourinho, Pelligrini and Wenger discovered that this year, and whilst a couple of those guys won things, it was hard work doing so. Next year will be harder still, Van Gaal or not.

United will be top 4 next season

At whose expense though?  They'll improve no doubt but it won't be easy for them to break into the top 4 again imo.   Great manager no doubt  but he's volatile and I think this appointment could will end in tears.  Boss's post summed it up perfectly for me

He added: "To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud.

"I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are."

Good manager, much better 10 years ago.  You can't polish a turd though, and their squad is turd.  Unless they spend serious money, I'm talking £150m-£200m, they'll finish outside the top 4.

Just name their starting 11 as it is now, with Vidic, Evra, Giggs, Rio already confirmed to be leaving and you'll laugh to yourself.  Smalling and Phil Jones at centre back?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Arsenal.

Reckon it'll finish -

City

Chelsea

Us

United

Hope we win it, obviously, but think Chelsea have to improve. Hopefully Shitcunt gets sacked around Christmas if they start poorly, and they end up having another disrupted season.

Great post Faustus.

It's like they've just got him in to appease the fan's, to put an end to the "He's an Everton manager, not a Man United manager" crowd. They would of been far better off handing Martinez or Pochettino the reigns and taking the inevitable backlash from their fans and embarking on a new era, rather than keeping all the stone monoliths of the past and placing them around Van Gaal... like thats a good thing.

Van Gaal is a 2nd or 3rd place rich teams appointment to keep the ball rolling, not an appointment for a 7th placed shell shocked side in massive need of a complete overhaul. The only logical reason is for Giggs to learn from him and succeed him, so then you've got Giggs shadowing him, waiting to stick the knife in, Ferguson undermining him at board level and all the older players still calling Ferguson 'boss'.

It's a clusterfuck and it's inevitably going to blow up in their faces, not least because the whole house of cards rests on Gigg's being their new Guardiola, and in reality he's the new Paul Ince.

Going to take him a while to get things rolling there - let's say the Dutch go far in Brazil, then the inevitable break - going to have next to no pre season to start implementing his and his coaching teams ideas, plus the inevitable raft of new recruits and leavers. It's hard coming into a new club at any time, but during a World Cup summer and when you are managing in the World Cup it's even harder.

Arsenal don't have the stomach for a title race, but under Wenger they'll always win enough games against the shite and dross of the league to finish top 4.  It's when he leaves that they'll struggle, big time.

Seems the mancs are doing what FSG were originally planning to do. Get van Gaal in for a few years while you groom a young manager. Obviously Rodgers wasn´t having that, as he was well qualified for the job already. Giggs on the other hand knows nothing about being a manager so he´ll happily oblige. Sensible plan sort of, but wonder if it´s going to work out. Van Gaal seems like he´s got a massive ego, don´t think he will share the power. Wouldn´t be surprised if Giggs are as marginalized under van Gaal come Christmas, as he was under Moyes.

The lack of effort that's gone into the whole thing is pretty astounding, you get the impression it's simply been a case of he's 'a name' and 'he's available'.

The mancs fans will be their undoing, it's the perfect example of the Platonic 'beast handler'.

You mean the same way oodles of fans on here were crying out for him (or similar ) and slated the Rodgers appointment as an easy 'yes man' for the yanks?

I view it as similar to when Kenny took over and Paisley took on an advisory role. It's just that Van Gaal will taken the flak if it fails...not Giggs

Not having that. The Mancs are going after it now. If they were rebuilding they'd have went with the young manager fad and kept him on a 4 year plan.

United need to move on. And they need to start with binning that purple nosed dickhead for a start. You've retired. Go and have a game of golf.

A 62 year old with a patchy recent record. It's another big risk for them. To be fair, I would have taken Van Gaal for us in a heartbeat when Roy left, but then we were desperate at the time. Maybe they are desperate now, but it's a decision that smacks of short-termism and a real fear of fucking up for the second time in a row. The good news for them is that he can't (and won't) do any worse than Moyes. The bad news is that there is no way that he's building a new dynasty there in the style of Ferguson.
