Espresso maker

Coffee heads. It's my birthday coming up and the missus has offered to get me a nice coffee machine for when we move. I'm not going to sting her for a Barrista style mega-dosh one as she doesn't drink the stuff but something I can quickly and easily make an espresso in the morning or a long drink of a weekend.

Saw this one on Amazon with good reviews and reasonably priced

Delonghi EC152 Pump Espresso Coffee Machine

I know there are the Tassimo ones and the Dulce capsule efforts as well but do not know much about them to be honest.

Any recommendations?

I'd then need to also purchase a press to make the coffee in then?

Oh I was assuming you'd be getting that espresso machine anyway, the quality of the bean and the grind is the most important thing with espresso. You don't need one of those mega expensive machines to make very good espresso if you follow the above.

Ah ok, cheers for the advise, I'll cross the coffee bridge once I've sorted out my hardware. What do you use?

I've got the de longhi icona espresso machine. It is nature's greatest miracle.

It's.....beautiful

On my phone so can't link but I have an Alessi stovetop espresso maker, which is great. Easy to use and clean and pretty quick.

The quality of the coffee is, as SP points out, important but to be honest I've never tried grinding my own beans. I probably should start.

I drank those stovetop ones when I was in france in the summer and they're great, I'm not sure how they'd translate to a gas oven though?

I bought a Melitta Caffeo Solo a couple of months ago and been very impressed with it. I used to have a Siemens one (name 50001 or something). They're in the same price range but the Solo is far superior.

I used to have a Nespresso Citiz but it nearly ruined me. The machine itsef is cheap. The capsules are not.

See, this is what happens once you've officially moved in with them.

When you haven't its all-you-can-think-of sex for your birthday. Then you move in together and the birthday sex isreplaced by a coffee machine. Enjoy it, because next year it'll be a jumper, and after that fucking socks....

It might depend on how you're currently meeting your coffee needs.

Up until Christmas I was spending at least £15 a week on coffee shop coffee (usually Costa). But then I got a Nespresso for Christmas and it's very decent.

The pods are relatively expensive (about 30p each) however in my case it's saving me at least a tenner a week. It's not as good as the likes of Costa, but it's serving me well on my morning coffee hit and I still treat myself to shop bought once or twice a week.

In honour of the bumped kettle thread:

I've got one of these. It is, officially, the dogs bollocks.

Half the time I just can't be arsed with it though and just want an instant. In that case I really like M&S Italian blend. Smoooooooth.

One oddity I have found though is I much prefer a "proper" coffee black and strong, conversely I prefer my instant milky and sweet.
