Was a pretty good start to the tournament I guess, even if it did turn scrappy a bit too much. Just realised I'll be a bit gutted when Uruguay play Mexico aswell as I want them both to go through.

Good game in the end, very even. Superb build-up and goal from the Saffers, but Mexico finally made them pay for slack marking. Mphela was unlucky near the end.

 

Point of note.

 

1 - Tschabalala was NOT man of the match, despite what ITV viewers thought.

 

2 - Giovani Dos Santos looks like a teenage girl footballer.

 

3 - Peter Dreary obviously thought the World Cup final had just finished after South Africa scored, such was the hyperbole.

 

4 - Another shit goal celebration. What the fuck was that? The Macarena?

 

Anyway, 1-1. Fair result, good start to the tournament. Onto Uruguay V France.

you look at a country like mexico - large population, fanatical about the sport, produce players with quickness and skill, and you wonder why they couldn't actually win a world cup some day.

 

then you come to the realization that obviously nobody ever bothers to develop as a keeper, and it's still possible, under the right conditions, for an overweight, middle aged man with desperately fading skills to play for the national team.

As far as opening games go i really enjoyed that. Pity Mphela didn't squeeze that ball in to make it 3-1, would have won a bit of money.
