A team that’s building needs to win a few like that. Creates a belief that will be needed when we start playing at the sharp end of competitions consistently again.

It can be a frustrating watch, and it’s not good for the old ticker, but we’ll reap the benefits in the next year or so.

Having said that, we do need to cut out the mistakes, and learn how to ‘switch on’ all of the time, not most of the time.

Oh and Nunez needs to sort that hair out. I can still, just about, live with his inability to put the ball in the onion bag. I can’t countenance him coming on the pitch disguised as Pippi Longstocking though.

Massive result from a terrible performance!!

We’re very far from the finished article, today was a perfect example of that.

Three points from a bad performance, and from a late comeback.

Let’s get the three points from Sheffield United please, and then take it from there!

Reminds me of where we were in 2017-18.

We've used all our get out of jail free cards today, and all our community chests and chances, and rabbits feet and horse shoes and four leaf clovers and origis. We were fucking awful but its games like these that give everyone that massive belief that we can win this fucking league.

Villa away was different as we dominated and final kicked the door in with robbo and mane.

Today, we huffed and puffed and as bad as our football was, the attitude to keep going and dig it out is very encouraging.

Weird subs, apart from endo obviously, as we had no penetration once mac and dom went off.

Fantastic result but plenty to work on.

Cunts all haha

There’s one winning hand we’ve yet to play. A Full House.

When the Anny Rd is finally full The Reds will definitely be loudly marching in.

Great win in the end with some individual brilliance but Nunez is a massive worry. He's missing way to many chances to justify his place in the team.

I just don't see him ever being the player we hope he would.

We can't rely on him, he's going to cost us big. Never known a player to fluff so many chances.

It's not just Nunez that's a worry, it's the front line.

They are a wave of 5 players that are difficult to contain when they're all there, but individually, there is no consistency in production besides Salah.

I could maybe exclude Gakpo because he's shown some chops playing deeper and he has the most complete game of the 4, but Jota, Diaz and Nunez are all definitely a worry.

...concentration, motivation, attitude and applicable need to be spot-on from first minute to last...

I add this in every match thread for a reason. We still have most of the players that showed a significant lack of the above at times last season, and we've added an entirely new midfield which will take a little time to be consistently effective even when they do all the right things. I can tolerate an off day if we have clearly given it our all but not been good enough, or if bad refereeing decisions have taken games away from us. What I can't tolerate is choosing to remain wide open and not bother to tighten things up when things are not going our way. We can get away with it for the most part against weaker opposition, but we are in the lap of the gods if we are up against stronger opposition and relying on they themselves having an off day, or the officials not going all PGMOL on us.

I think the up-and-coming period of games requires us to be a little more pragmatic defensively. Jurgen is capable of it, as he did practically the same over the festive period (and well into January) 2 years ago when we knew we would be without Mo and Sadio. That spell saw us grind out results. The same approach now could reap huge dividends for this squad, as could set them up for the business end of the season, and also show that they are capable of getting results with different approaches.
