Also, ILM actually did invent, or directly support the invention of a huge portion of modern special effects. The legacy of Star Wars goes far beyond it's shitty sequels and prequels.

Nice try. I think Star wars is a great film and I'm aware of it's impact and legacy.

Out of curiosity, 10 people voting for One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, how would you vote if it was Godfather vs. Star Wars?

I would vote for The Godfather. I don’t hate Star Wars and I enjoyed the first 3 films. Played with the toys etc when I was a kid. I’m 45 now though!

Ray Harryhausen preceded these effects by decades and with a much smaller budget.

Not really, but ILM certainly wouldn't have achieved what they did without him.

Anyway, he was just ripping off Melies.

For all those wailing about the GF being a hive of philistines, it shouldn’t need pointing out that the Godfather films combined beat Star Wars comfortably, and the three “proper” films combined received more than double its votes. If we’d used transferable votes one of the Godfathers would have won.

I suspect a fair bit of the scorn is a result of the way Star Wars’ legacy has been soiled by the prequels, the commercialisation and the needless endless editing. If you’ve got a downer on Star Wars I’m pretty certain you’ll have it fused in your mind’s eye with Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks. Guess what, loads of fans of the original don’t like them either.

As for the film itself: while in terms of dialogue, characterisation and plotting it’s clearly behind the other three, in the creative, technical and experiential stakes - has anyone mentioned the music? - it pushed the boundaries of an artistic medium like few other pieces of work ever have. It’s the film that possibly more than any other has made people fall in love with cinema. Taking their first step into a larger world, indeed. On that basis it’s a deserving winner.

I grew up loving the original Star Wars films and would happily tune in even now if I was channel flicking and it was on, but you can’t compare Star Wars to the other three films in this poll. I mean we are talking about three of the greatest films ever made. Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

Despite the aberration of this poll result I have very much enjoyed the discussion in these threads for the best 70’s films. I bought four DVDs the other day off HMV that I’d never seen before off the back of recommendations on here. Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, Badlands and Serpico, they were in the two for £10 offer. I look forward to watching them once the f**tball is finished for the season.

So nice one Stig for running another boss GF tournament.

Very welcome mate. I nearly packed it in after this particular result but the 80s and 90s ones should be even better
