Virgil Van Dijk

What I like most about the lad is the apparent calming influence he seems to have had on the rest of our defence. He just looks unflappable at the moment and i am sure the rest of the team realise that he is the real deal.

There is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season and no doubt there will be occasions where things don't go his way, but i am genuinely hopeful that we have a world class defender who loves the jersey and will be the mainstay of our defence for years to come.

Have a look at the Anfield tunnel cam footage on the official you tube channel. When the ox gets the ball for the first, van dijk has his hands in the air straight away. He knew it was a goal about 5 seconds before salah even got the ball.

Fast forward to 6.30

The interaction between Rafa and Jurgen makes me feel warm inside.

Both he and Matip (who was better yesterday than even VVD) played excellently. I hope Matip is over his dip in form. He found his balls and was yelling and organising yesterday.

I’m not convinced by Matip if I’m honest. He looks a bit craven to me.

In a way Virgil sort of negates the need for a deep lying playmaker because he does that from Centre Back, someone like Jorginho who roams around creating and linking up play from higher up the field would suit us better than getting in Xabi Alonso type midfielder because you’d take away one of Van Dijk’s biggest strengths, his passing. He’d literally just keep passing 5 yards to our DM.

You can have both! Alonso and Agger, another ball-playing midfielder, did play well together.
