First of all, Lucas is a top fella. He is a good professional and a good character. And who can't love a modern day multi-millionaire footballer who spends his time looking after his ranch in the summer? 

 

When he came to Liverpool we thought we were getting a goalscoring box-to-box type but it didn't turn out that way. I think that's why a lot of fans were slow to see his plus points at first. At his best he was a very good defensive midfielder - never world class, certainly in relation to some of the midfielders we've had over the years, but well worth his place in the side. 

 

As things look today he has had too many injuries. To my eye he is still decent, but just a bit off the pace. He knows where to position himself and so on, but all too often he is just a fraction of a second too late, hence the reputation he is getting for conceding free kicks, sometimes in dangerous places. With the age, the injuries, and the increasing pace and athleticism of the Premier League, I can't see Lucas rectifying this side of his game any time soon. 

 

Arguably he is still worth a place in the squad, but at 28 years old if he wants to play football he should go with our blessing. I'm sure he can do well for an Italian team. Unfortunately we'll get rinsed on the fee as Italian teams would rather give you an IOU than actual cash. Still, for a top man like Lucas we should take it on the chin. Not everything is about wringing the last few shillings out of every situation.

You'll miss him when he's gone, when it's just a bunch of selfish twats eyeing moves away the second they have to sit on the bench or players that think they're far too good for us. Players like Lucas are a dying breed.

 

A player that was hated when he arrived and kept his head down, never said a word about it and won the fans over in time. I don't rate him much as a player, (similar to you stringy) but as a man he's right up there with Sami, Kuyt and Hamann in terms of foreign players that have just got us, the city, the fans, everything.

 

I hope he gets a boss send off, but Brendan will probably fuck him off on the last day of the transfer window for nothing and he won't have the chance to say goodbye. Has anyone noticed the fact that hardly anyone can last more than 3 years with Brendan?

There's a comedy piece in The Echo today, preparing the waters for there to be no replacement for him, and at times almost trying to make it sound as though the idea of having a midfielder who keeps the back door locked and the defence protected is some sort of flat-earther archaism.

 

That said, it's no-one's fault in my book. Superb professional, one of the last of our players I have any sort of attachment to, and I'd happily bet my house he's one of the best people within the club at this time. I'd personally be in favour of keeping him within the squad as an insurance policy in effect, and he's quite right not to accept that, just as Rodgers is not to want him as first-choice.

 

The issue for me is that Rodgers isn't thinking that for the reasons many of us are - that he needs to be upgraded to a defensive midfielder of a higher class - but that he doesn't believe in the necessity for that type of player, superior version or not. The latter is what concerns me, and what will ultimately be on Rodgers's LFC headstone, in my opinion.
