Juxtaposes well with the shitness of modern football thread, Shanks is the reason most of us are still here.

Didn't stop you pining for Stan Cullis at the time though, did it? You haughty cunt.

A great man. Truely laid the foundations for what the club has become not to mention winning titles, the FA Cup and European Trophies for the first time in the club's history.

Got a couple of great stories about the man. One of my favourites is when we were playing away in Europe one night with te game at 0-0. The club used to use Aer Lingus for all European travel and Bill had invited the Captain pilot to sit on the bench during the game.

As the match wore on and time running down, Bill was asking the backroom staff who to put on to nick a goal. Bill turned to the pilot and asked him who did he think he should put on up front? He said Phil Boersma.

Shanks made the change, Boersma came on and scored the winner! Fucking brilliant.

Saw this picture recently it's of Bill talking to the Newcastle players after the Cup Final.....could you imagine Mourinho or Ferguson doing something similar?

I actually could imagine Mourinho doing that, difference is he would do it in an utterly twattish, ppatronising, self serving manner - whereas you just know that Shanks doing it there was just what he was a football man being a football man.

Set the tone for the whole ethos of the club itself. The beauty of Liverpool is that it was understated, a quiet, well oiled machine, merging hard graft with talent rather than being built around superstars. If the mancs were a yellow Lotus we were a classic Rolls.

we still are.  Expensive for what we are, and liable to break down.

Just watched "Making Shankly" on Prime.

It's more of a social history about Glenbuck than a film about "Willie" Shankly, but it's definitely worth watching.

I watched that yesterday, was ok, strange the way the whole village has just been erased from existence.

That John Mclaughlin, Peter Thompson and Ian Ross sat there? Looks like old trafford before the started developing the shit hole.

Perhaps Martin Tyler was somewhere in that crowd, commentating to himself under his breath, nurturing an incipient waspishness.
