Just watched this which Paul McCartney produced in the 80s because he was pissed off with the creative liberties the Buddy Holly story with Gary Busey took with his life story. 
 

His death was the biggest musical loss in history in my opinion. First cassette I ever had when I was a kid was Buddy Holly greatest hits.

Waylon Jennings was supposed to on that plane. He was playing bass for Buddy at the time but JP Richardson(Big Bopper) had the flu and asked Waylon to give up his seat for him. So Waylon took the bus, apparently he felt guilty about it for years and rarely brought it up as when he told Buddy Holly he was taking the bus Buddy said 'hope the bus breaks down" Waylon replied "Hope the plane crashes".

That's right he never got on.
