Jimmy Eat World - Chase This Light

Just been into town to pick up my copy, can't wait to get home and give it a listen.

Anyone else got it?

My copy's still stuck in the mountain of post that isn't getting sorted at the depot. Have it on my Ipod though after it fell off the back of the internet, not quiet as good as Futures for me but still some great songs on there.

I've got that Bleed American album - thats a belter. Whats their later stuff like?

Someone in work reckons they're emo. My fucking hot balls they are.

Bleed American was the first album I bought by them. Futures is also very good, but go back and get Clarity which is a belter.

I think they could be classed as 'emo' but they have far more in common with the post-punk/proper emo scene of the 90s.

Had several listens over the past couple of days and it's a damn good album. If you don't agree then you will probably be visited in the night by a griffin (or unicorn if the griffin's are busy) to have your ears eaten.

Karl, I agree, the album is good, but I'm still disappointed. I was really hoping for a more mature effort from them following along the same styling that has been ever present in their previous albums. Particularly, the way their music has more layers than an onion. I feel like they've over simplified this album, to the point that it sounds like dumbed down pop.

Futures is my favorite album of theirs because of the flexibility they showed by going darker at times. For example, "Polaris" and "Night Drive" are not really songs you would expect to hear from them, yet they still sound like Jimmy Eat World songs. All at the same time you have the infectious hooks, layered guitars, bittersweet lyrics, and glossy finish that has been present in their music from the beginning.

I was really looking forward to Chase This Light, but it just doesn't seem like a Jimmy Eat World album. Oh, it sounds like a Jimmy Eat World album, but it feels like a band trying to be them. I've already given it 4-5 listens, and I'll continue listening to it because it's a excellent pop album, but I was expecting an excellent Jimmy Eat World album.

Also, Karl's dead on about Clarity, anyone who hasn't gone back and listened to it is really missing out. Check out the songs "Lucky Denver Mint", "Ten", "For Me This is Heaven", and "Goodbye Sky Harbor". Those are my favorites.

While I agree to a certain extent that it just sounds like a Jimmy Eat World album, but a little more accessible in places, why does that have to be a bad thing? I'm fed up of my favourite bands just maturing, going in new directions and forgetting what made them so special in the first place.

Jimmy Eat World have made a Jimmy Eat World album, with uptempo, as you say, danceable tracks that make me smile, with lyrics that resonate with me more than any other band out there. If it aint broke, then don't fix it. Big Casino, Always Be, Carry You, Feeling Lucky and Dizzy are songs which remind me why I fell so head over heels in love with this band a good six summers ago...

Oh and as for Clarity, I'll go with Blister as my favourite.

Feeling Lucky and Here It Goes make me wanna dance the night away. It's a great album, lots of fun but with some great slower paced tracks.

I'd love to go but I can't justify the cost at the moment, thanks anyway though.

Although they are playing Leeds Uni.

Well I'll drive, but a leap night out in Liverpool sounds good. It's a Friday.

Could conceivably go to both I suppose.

I'll see you there!

Nice one.

Blister is deffo my favourite on Clarity. Just given the new one a listen - got it the other day. First impressions are it's better than Futures, but not blown away by it by any means. Potential to be a grower.

God damn tempting-ness. I may have to cry off both as I go away the first week of March and I really don't think I can afford it.

That's how I felt on my first listen. Granted it was on a transatlantic flight when I was really sad and really tired, but it really has grown. And I took for granted how great Big Casino is too because I'd heard it so many times. But that's one helluvan opening track, up there with anything they've done.

Cheer up and appreciate this as what it is dude. Nothing is EVER going to beat Bleed American, but this is a great album.

Oh I not being depressive about it at all.

You know what the problem is? There's been far too many new albums out this year, so I've spread them a bit thin and not got to know them properly. New Hundred Reasons one last week - love it.

I feel the same actually, but more so about albums I've been given by other people (ie you). There's some great stuff there that I'm only just getting round to listening to properly having only briefly done so previously.
