I don't ask for much.

 

This is how it's gonna be. Build from the ground up.

 

A chance to get the European campaign back to where we expect it to be. That's not to look down upon our group opponents, but we should be get through the group and finishing top without too much fuss. The strength in depth of our squad compared to the rest is massive. A win here plus anything less than 3 points for Toulouse in their next game means we will achieve just that. The fixture in Austria showed the problems we can create for ourselves when complacency and a disjointed performance combine with an opponent who are up for it in front of their home crowd. It took us bringing the big guns on in the second half to finally showcase our superiority.

 

We've met Austrian opposition a few times down the years, but LASK is a first. The last time we played an Austrian side was when we faced Red Bull Salzburg in 2019/20 as European champions. The home game ended up a close-run thing largely due to complacency. It finished 4-3 tanks to Mo. The Salzburg side that night was coached by Jesse Marsch, and had a front line of Haaland, Taki (who joined us a few weeks later) and Hwang (now at Wolves). All three scored in that game at Anfield. Fifteen years earlier we faced Grazer AK, and again put in a complacent display at Anfield having won the first leg of our Champions League qualifier comfortably in Graz. The Austrians that night came away with a 1-0 win but lost 2-1 on aggregate. That season ended with the Miracle of Istanbul.

 

I'd expect Jurgen to go with the players that have generally started our group games, so in midfield we should see players like Endo and Harvey. He might decide to go strong in a bid to wrap things up early. Not yet sure of the situations regarding Ali and Diogo but I'd expect them to sit this one out. The latter may well have been involved but Ali would have been rested anyway. Fitness and form is one thig, another is to rid ourselves of the complacency that marred our performance in Toulouse last time out. That was shambolic for long periods. Concentration, motivation, attitude and application need to be spot on from first minute to last, to bag the result we want with the minimum of fuss. Get it done.

No mate, we need to win this one, then you can forget we’re even in the competition until you look up in March and realise we’re in the semifinal and want to win.

Bit like the league cup in that regard.

Need to win this so there is no kind of jeopardy in the final game, and we can rest players in the middle of a 9 games, in 27 days run.
