Atlético built the template last spring, but you’re right about most other sides left in it.

That said, if they’ve any sense they’ll sit back a bit.

Depends very much on the luck of the draw as well. If Bayern get City (unlikely I know) and we get the winner of Sevilla and Dortmund etc then you never know.

Klopp gotta take quite a bit of blame tonight. He didn't seem to try anything tonight. We tried the same all night with zero chance of winning. Why didn't we push more? Why didn't we use the wing backs? Why didn't we use Thiago for what's he's worth? Why did we drone on for 90 mins; with zero pace, zero will, zero energy. Where's the counter pressing?

On the goal we let them play until they scored: we didn't properly press the ball ONCE. Of course they scored.

We do better against better teams.  Can you imagine any of the teams left in the competition setting up like Burnely or Brighton against us?

It was nice when we were better against all teams like the last 2 years.

But as Nelly mentioned last page, this is a broken team. No soul.

An absolute joke even in the current state.

And two last minute signings in Jan, after the horse had bolted, looked like a lame afterthought.

The club simply hasn't conducted itself like Champions this season.

The injury crisis was clear and obvious a couple of months before Jan 31.

There are excuses for this season, yes, but we've helped make them look like excuses rather than reasons.

Very disappointing.

No idea about Dortmund this season but Sevilla are a pretty well oiled machine. On current form they would make us look a bit silly.

It is, the lack of planning going into January is crazy. Our record against so called lesser clubs currently is awful.

Proper looking forward to some big deep breaths and shoulder shrugs from Jurgen. Can't wait.

Nailed it. Observational comedy. It’s funny because it’s true.

That is absurd. How do you begin to explain that.

Different ways of doing it. 1 win & 4 draws. Or 7 draws. Or 2 wins and 1 draw. It’s simple maths.

Problem for us is not only our own problem with injuries but city have sorted they're defensive problems and that makes them more balanced. Scoring goals easily and not letting anything in. I watched them tonight against Burnley and wished we could open them up like them. That's how we should be this term but the owners have decided that we are good enough even though our best players are either injured or out of form. Criminal decisions being made.

Does anybody think that the instabilities in central defence have had a massive effect on TAA's role?

His form isn't great. But he seems to have had his attacking instincts curbed a bit. When we go forward, he doesn't seem to offer the overlap as much as he did and seems to tuck in a bit and play as a central midfielder to offer a second central blocker in front of the centre backs. Probably a tactical tweak because Klopp doesn't want the makeshift defence exposed and he's also missing, in Fabinho, his best midfielder in terms of breaking up attacks.

The attacking threat down the right seems to have dropped right off.

Players not good enough:

Milner

Gini

Ox

Origi

Phillips but you can’t really blame him.

But biggest disappointment over the past 2 years has been Firmino...what a huge drop off.

Neg him all you like. Fair post this though.

The miss by Salah in the first few minutes was crucial. Score that and their game plan has to alter, if not immediately then later in the game certainly, but that wasn’t the sole reason why Brighton won.

They based their game plan on solid defence, as have many teams against us this season, and they were able to carry it off because they were so disciplined.

Add to that they scored with the first chance from either side on target and we had no alternative plan and the result was all too predictable.

The depressing thing is that even with a lack of first choice players available, we don’t ever seem to be able to change the way we play, to try something different.

I’m not looking forwards to the City game at all.

The nightmare scenario is what the fuck will happen if we fail to secure a top 4 spot?

I hate this modern obsession with it as some sort of 'achievement', but with owners are very risk averse and a squad in need of work, failing to nail down a place could have really bad consequences for us.
