Bewildering pet players certain managers have?

Wenger was bad with this. Kept faith with guys like Walcott and Wilshere for way too long. Another was Flamini, who he signed twice and kept playing even when he was washed up.

Klopp had Grosskreutz at Dortmund who was completely out of place in their attack but who was pretty much ever present.

Klopp’s as ruthless as they come. We can only buy players during two specific windows, hence his loyalty in the past to lads who weren’t up to it. They either get up to speed or they get replaced, and there’s few enough of them left now.

Moreno and Lallana won’t start against Arsenal, but they’ll be used in calculated gambles when others are knackered or injured.

Luiz Felipe Scolari. Pissed Diego Costa off into deciding to play for Spain because he kept picking shite like Fred and Jo for his Brazil side. Scolari was lucky that Neymar kept bailing his forwards out, until he got injured in the World Cup and the whole country went into a period of mourning, and the team shit the bed in the semi final against the Germans.

In fairness to Scolari, Conte was happy to effectively concede the title and his job in exchange for not having to manage Costa again.

Fantastic footballer, but I reckon managing him would be like trying to reason with a two-year old who’s just spent a night in a Skittle factory.

Simeone’s crazy enough to find him relatively normal.

I remember when Graham Taylor when he was England manager would always pick certain players as for some reason he trusted that they were the best players in their relevant position.

Carlton Palmer in midfield. I mean, seriously? Aspirations for doing well in major tournaments and with players like John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker et al and the best central midfield partnership includes Carlton Palmer?

Niko Krancjar and Harry Redknapp. Signed him about 45 times. However this probably meant that loads of brown envelopes were involved.

Read an article a while back saying Harry was thinking of going onto ' I'm a Celebrity ' and one of the comments below was suggesting that he would take Krancjar as his luxury item.

Brendan Rodgers with Joe Allen.

I wouldn't call that bewildering. When Rodgers managed Swansea in the Premier League they finished 3rd in possession % that year, which Allen was hugely responsible for and which is pretty much unheard of for a small club in the Premier League.

When he wasn't being bi-polar and deciding to wing it, Rodgers wanted a possession style and so it made sense that he wanted to play Allen. That bar his Euro 2016 performances aside, he turned out to be not very influential was unforeseen.

Grosskreutz did a good job for Klopp at Dortmund. When Klopp left so did he and was never as good again. It was like the Brian Clough effect at Forest.

Nothing bewildering about Mourinho sticking with Felaini, he's only shit at playing football with his feet, but Mourinho uses him for his elbows and massive head.

Wenger and Wilshere is a great shout. Used up squad space and wages, meanwhile they waited for him to be fit without signing a proper CM who'd have relegated him to the bench.

Arrigo Sacchi always used to pick Casiraghi ahead of Signori for Italy. Signori used to bang goals in for fun in Serie A, which back then meant that you were doing the business against the world's best defenders. Casiraghi wasn't that bad a player in his own right, it's just that he didn't have Signori's ability to conjure goals out of nothing.

To be fair, in the 90s, they had an embarrassment of riches with regards to forwards. They had the following players to choose from; Baggio, Mancini, Casiraghi, Signori, Ravanelli, Vialli, Zola, and Chiesa. That was before the likes of Vieri, Del Piero and Totti started making inroads.
