Suarez bite v2

If it was drugs or corruption, then the player gets hit, and any club he's with suffers in the process - which is harsh, but what else can FIFA do in that situation but ban the player outright?

BUT - it's neither of those things - it's a repeated occurrence of an offence that isn't really that bad, it's just something that our European sensitivities consider taboo.

The ban should have been for Uruguay, but in such a way that it did hurt him personally. Miss this tournament plus the next tournament that Uruguay qualify for (including any qualification matches).

LFC are screwed here though - if they appeal, they'll be castigated, if they don't appeal, much the same from LFC fans.

Agreed.

It damages LFC, an innocent third party, far more than it does the player too.

His transfer value will fall, hiking up his wage potential for a suitor at the same time. We lose tens of millions, he makes several millions.

No way does Suarez come out of this with more money than he would have made before.  He's done as far as endorsement deals go - rumours yesterday that Adidas were already thinking of cutting up their contract with him (for cause).

It hurts Uruguay a little, it hurts Suarez in a way (but not in an important way because he's already financially set for life), but it absolutely kills LFC for next season.  Devastating blow for us, all for something that happened in a tournament we had no part in.  Ridiculous.

We agree the club ban is unwarranted.

But Suarez was the man who handed FIFA the loaded gun.

Unjust bans are still unjust. Just because Suarez did something daft, it doesn't mean FIFA are exempt from criticism any more than the judges who jailed people for years for pinching water or rice or receiving stolen goods whilst there we riots going on.

I would accept it myself. He's out for 9 games which isn't the end of the world. It could have been a lot worse.

Plus four months including Liverpool matches.

FIFA haven't done this to fuck LFC over, they're the ultimate law unto themselves.  The punishment doesn't even make sense it's so cobbled together, not least that some are saying he will still be allowed to play in Uruguay's friendlies as it only covers competitive matches.

So he may be off playing games for the country he was representing when he commited the offence, while not being able to play for the club he wasn't.  Not to mention that when he bit Ivanovic he ony missed club games, so it didn't work the other way round to any degree (albeit that sanction was only provided by the FA).

Hardly a surprise though unfortunately, a more inept organisation than FIFA it would be hard to find. By 2030 they'll be playing World Cups on the ocean bed if there is enough money in it.  This is the rough we take having Suarez on board, and next time it will only be disproportionately worse.

Agree entirely, it's not anti-:Liverpool, it's FIFA going into PR mode and being seen to deal with 'troublesome' acts swiftly and harshly. Only the act isn't that bad, and there's been a few worse ones already in this World Cup - but elbows and two footers are 'part of the game' it seems.

This could well fuck over our transfer window as well. Massive difference between playing with the worlds best player and going to a club that may well bomb out of the CL whilst not even being able to gain anything from sale of said best player.

This just fucking sucks.

Or maybe potential targets are afraid of being bitten in training.

What I struggle with here is that LFC have been more heavily punished than Uraguay.

We will lose our star forward for a fifth of the PL season and the opening rounds of the CL, whilst Uraguay will have him available for the Confederations Cup.

On the positive side at least Luis will be fresh as a daisy having rested for four months. Hopefully he will eat well.
