Express sport do a story 10.15pm saying he is close to joining us. 10.23pm The mail releases a story saying he looks like going to Spurs as his agents say that it is them they have been talking to.

Up until at least three days ago we hadn't even put a bid in for him.

The Independent have just reported both us and spurs have lost out to Dortmund in signing him.

Liverpool and Spurs lose out in race for £20m midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan The Independent 23:33

UPDATE: The Independent claim Mkhitaryan “looks likely to join Borussia Dortmund”, completely contradicting all reports. Earlier this week it was reported that the German club had a £19.5m bid turned down, with Shaktar wanting £25m.

To the tune of Englishman in New York:

He's Armenian

He's a boss Armenian

He is Henrickh Mkh-i-tar-y-an.

Jesus wept!

If he hears that, he'll do nothing but fucking cringe!

To start with, his name isn't pronounced like anything like the above - it is mki-ta-ryan, the emphasis being on the last "a" (like ta-li-ban), got it?

Liverpool and Spurs lose out in race for £20m midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Sam Wallace

Chief Football Correspondent

The much sought-after Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Shakhtar Donetsk looks likely to join Borussia Dortmund, leaving Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool disappointed.

The 24-year-old suited the profile of players both Premier League clubs seek to sign – young and with the potential to increase in value – even with a £20m price tag on him. While Liverpool’s pursuit of him has been well-chronicled, Spurs also made significant efforts to do a deal for the player.

Mkhitaryan is involved with the Italian-Dutch agent Mino Raiola, who also represents Martin Jol, Mario Balotelli and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Spurs were unable to come to an agreement for the player, who is also keen on the Champions League football that Dortmund can offer. Mkhitaryan missed the start of a training camp this month with Shakhtar, who have already sold the Brazilians Fernandinho and Willian this summer.

Spurs’ deal to sign the Brazil international Paulinho for £17m is all but complete. The player will have a medical next week after the Confederations Cup final tomorrow and is expected to complete his move from Corinthians once it is complete.

Spurs will listen to offers for Tom Huddlestone, who is interesting Sunderland, Scott Parker, Jake Livermore and Benoît Assou-Ekotto.

Having watched Henrikh Mkhitaryan grow as a person and a player at Shakhtar Donetsk, I will dance a jig if he signs for Liverpool #player

Found this about it.

Bubnov is not a former teammate. He's a former football player, now a pundit, and he has no direct connection with Mkhitaryan, as Bubnov is in Moscow, and Henrik has been playing in Armenia, then in Ukraine. So his words are not more than his own opinion. he is somewhat a controversial figure, although he is respected.

A journalist close to Armenian FA President Ruben Hayrapetyan (the said 3rd owner) has reported earlier today that Hayrapetyan who is under serious pressure from the Armenian football fans and press, has declared that he is "giving up" on his share of the ownership rights because he "first of all is concerned about the well-being and further development of the Armenian football talent, and money is not the issue". Which will be hard to believe, I know. But it could be true.

Later, that journalist participated in a TV show where he disclosed that transfer agreement has been reached, and Henrik an about to leave to his new club.

At the same time, Moscow based Artur Petrosyan of Sport-express.ru who has his own sources, broke the news on twitter in somewhat cryptic manner, but then in a while published a report which you have all seen.

Maybe us, Spurs and Dortmund have bought a 1/3 timeshare slot in him.

Us, January - April

Spurs May - August

Dortmund Sept-December.

We should start showing interest in some total plonkers and let spurs beat us to them. Has the added advantage of keeping Ayres busy while we get on with the real signings - just make sure he knows he's got a 50p limit on his spending.
