Can't make up my mind, a 13" macbook air or the 13" i5 macbook pro...

The only thing putting me off the pro is the 1280x800 resolution compared to the 1440x900 on the air.

I'll be using it mainly for importing photos into lightroom with some touch up work, not exactly a pixel peeper but will I notice the inferior resolution on the pro as I really want the faster processor.

(Also, anyone used the Higher Education store online when errrm not in higher education?)

I tried that higher education thing, but it wouldn't let me on without being on my colleges computers.

If you know anyone who works at an apple store, they get a bigger discount for friends and family. I got my 27" iMac for £1200, should have been nearly £1500.

Not sure what staff get, but Mrs Paul and I got 12% off our new iMac last week. In total, all deals added together including the App Store voucher and printer deal, we got £1700 worth of stuff for £1300 using the educational discount.

Oh, I can get right through to checkout on the 13" pro for 859 instead of 999. Just wondering if they check my fraudulent claims or not!

My main concern is the resolution though...

Sorry my mistake, that was when I was at university. It's letting me now if I say college.

And the staff discount is 17% I think. There or thereabouts.

If you want to do any sort of graphics work, you're not going to get much joy out of a 13 inch display, as nice as they are. 15 inch macbook pro would be the minimum I'd consider.

It might be wise having a look on the refurb store to see if you can't get a decent deal on a 15.

15 inch MBP is pretty much the same portability. I mean, it's only 1.57 inch wider than the 13 inch. That's not even something you're going to notice on a day-to-day basis, if at all. It's also only a touch heaver (1lb), so from a portability aspect, you're not going to notice much over the 13 inch MBP.

The Air is ultimate for portability, but there's a major performance hit - something that really matters when using photoshop and designing stuff. With the Air you get a 1.7 i5 dual core, but if you go with the MBP you get a i7 quad core 2.0/2.2. Then there's the hit on the drive space. 128gb on the air, 500gb minimum on the MBP, and the MBP also has its own video card to make use of core image. The air doesn't have a disk drive, so if it's your main machine then that's something to think about.

If it's just for portability, and you want it to keep you going in between time at your powerful desktop, the air is a good choice. If you're going to be using it most of the time, and want portability, then the 15 inch MBP is a much wiser choice in my opinion. However, if you're still set on a 13 inch, then it's up to you on the res. v portability.

There's a 15" MBP in the refurb store for 1300 quids.

As for the slightly better res... meh, you're already cramped to shit on the 13, it's not like it's going to make much difference.

I'm slightly miffed that I've been tempted into spending £850 on a £600 laptop as it is, no way I'd even consider £1300 for a laptop.

Newb!

It's crazy that the pro has a worse resolution that the air.

I was thinking that myself, actually.

This is what puts me off owning a mac.

Some cunt on the internet using a one liner about a Dell? I wouldn't cut your wrists over it, to be honest. I use both PC and Mac, and it has nothing to do with any PC v Mac nonsense. It has do do with me having several bad experiences with Dell's shoddy products. If that's enough to put you off of owning a certain brand of computer, which is essentially nothing more than a tool, then I'm a bit lost.

Any particular reason that it has to be a Mac?

I'm not looking to start the PC/Mac debate either, it was boring ten years ago, but if I read this thread right you're thinking about buying a 13" i5 based Mac that should be £999 but that you might be able to blag somehow for £859?

Asus N53SN-SZ085V Laptop

£834 inc VAT. That was from a 60 second search by the way, there will be better deals out there.

(Edit: Worst waste of 10,000th post you're ever going to see.)

Wasn't really serious NV, was just a stereotypical apple fanboy thing to say but as you say you were just talking specifically about dell anyway.

RR, no real reason, just thought I'd give it a whirl, can't go above 13" though.

For portability I presume? Fair enough, relatively small differences in weight, footprint etc but I know how infuriating it is when you've already worked something like that out based on Christ knows how many factors that you don't want to have to bother explaining and some quim comes along giving it but... but... but... so if you say it has to be a 13", I'll just accept it.

I agree that you're probably going to struggle finding anything else with the sort of resolution you're after in a screen that small though. Shame I don't have time to do serious internet-scouring tonight or else I'd take that as a challenge.

That Asus one is out of stock anyway. Still, a sexy bit of kit that for under £850 - shame that I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a new toy myself or else I'd snap one up when they have them back in.
