I've been watching a few older Scorcese films that I've been meaning to watch for a while, the bloke doesn't make a bad movie. My scores would possibly have been 9 a piece of I'd watched them on release but they are both obviously very dated now.

The Last Temptation of Christ - I'm not religious but have always found the story of Jesus fascinating and Scorceses version of things is the best I've seen, it's not perfect but gives a more realistic account of things without all the hyperbole. Great casting as well. 8/10

Mean Streets - Reminds me of A Bronx Tale in its tone but it's definitely the catalyst for Scorceses later far more polished efforts. The soundtrack is phenomenal and nice early performances for Keitel and De Niro. 8/10

I've still got to see a few more of his older films, any recommendations? I've watched his recent stuff and more high profile older stuff like Goodfellas, Casino, etc.

Film with Nic cage as an ambulance driver was Scorsese. Mean streets is worth a twang. Did he make shutter island too?

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore was made around the same time as Mean Streets & is brilliant. I just watched it again tonight.

After Hours, his short film in New York Stories & The Colour of Money are also worth a look.

The Lost Boys - 9 out of 10.

I don’t watch many old films I loved growing up these days as I find a lot of them have dated badly and kind of ruin my perception of them, but having not watched this in years I recorded it from BBC last night and watched it tonight. Well despite the 80’s mullets and soundtrack, it’s still a stone cold classic. Great cast, great story, loads of laughs, and a film teenagers today could still love. Great stuff.

I’ve had Point Break on my recordings for ages and have been putting off watching it in case it falls into my badly dated category, but I’m thinking of watching it next weekend after my The Lost Boys success.

Took the kids to see Pinocchio. Its a dubbed Italian production with real actors rather than animation. Its very fucking odd and a bit disturbing for kids. At one point they hang him from a tree and are waiting for him to "stop twitching". Try explaining that to an 8 year old. Not recommended.

Was it set in ww2?

Did you take them to see this on the same day you gave them kidneys for breakfast?

You're one twisted individual.

Dark Phoenix - The final 20th Century X-Men films is another failed adaptation of the Dark Phoenix storyline which is too rushed, has one of the least interesting set of villains in recent years (you can see why Marvel but the brakes on them using the Skrulls) and just limps listlessly from set-piece to set-piece. Give the X-Men a few years off and then reintroduce them with the MCU and hopefully there will be precision in the storytelling. Fassbender looks monumentally bored. 3 out of 10.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote - Terry Gilliam's dream finally becomes reality and it's... underwhelming. Adam Driver really gets into it but the film is too long, doesn't really have a point (can happen in Gilliam films) and doesn't seem to merit the 25 years it's taken to get it to the screen. I did like the blending between reality and fantasy that happens throughout, it looks pretty for the most part, but it just never clicks all together. 6 out of 10.

A Walk in the Woods - Gentler territory. Robert Redford plays Bill Bryson who decides to walk the 2000+ miles of the Appalachian trail with grizzled former alcoholic Nick Nolte. It's not very long, not very taxing but it's fun and it's nice spending time with two older actors in this sort of scenario. Far better than it had any right to be. 7 out of 10.

Ha ha. Yes. Mrs kurtz is away so the parenting style is a tad more eclectic than they’re used to. Character forming stuff.

Just drop them at the home of a semi responsible adult, who they at least vaguely know, and go to the pub like a normal father would when his wife’s away.

Stop torturing your children.

Metacritic give that 2.2/10, while IMDB gives it 4.4/10. As pretty as she is, she ain't getting me watching that. And with those elbows...

Lethal Weapon 3 & 4.

3 is ok. Quite enjoyable.

4 is a desperate attempt to kick start a franchise back into life despite it being’ too old for this shit’.

3 - 7.5

4 - 5.5
