How arsed are you about climate change?

  1. 1. How arsed are you about climate change?

    • Very. I do everything I possibly can to be greener.
    • Arsed. I do what I have to and a bit more, as long as it doesn't hurt my pocket.
    • Think it's an issue and I do what I have to, but I'm not sweating it.
    • Climate change, schmimate change. Big conspiracy to tax us more and sell us shit we don't need.

I'm not buying it.

Having done a lot of reading about it lately, there is so much misinformation out there. This myopic focus on CO2 emissions and the related fear porn is bonkers. There is definitely an agenda and it seems that this will be used to remove liberties and control the masses. Renewables are not enough to replace current energy usage, so by trying to get to the mythical net zero, we would need to drastically reduce the amount of power we use. This would have huge consequences for the poorest people in the world.  There seems very little evidence that there has been an increase in extreme weather events, and the recent spate of forest fires seem to be a combination of arson, forest mismanagement and recklessness with things like power cables etc. The idea that if we get a tiny bit warmed the world will suddenly burn and everything will die, seems to be based on nothing really.

I think this CO2 obsession also detracts from other important environmental issues, like protecting our waterways, not overfishing, use of pesticides etc.

I'm sure I'll get shot down, as six months ago I was on the other side of this argument, but I have since listened to alternative view points and changed my mind.

Fire took off on Aug 18th, travelled a dozen miles in as many hours (very very fast), burned out a bunch of people, a couple of whom I know, shut-down the trans-Canada highway, and came within a couple of miles of home.

(Didn't burn the mill, thankfully, as that would have cratered the local economy.)

Spent the last week there, quite something to see.

I've read that halving Co2 will cause massive starvation, Co2 being essential for plant growth.

Adding Co2 to crops in a lab has been proven to increase crop yields, although water scarcity then becomes an issue. Real world data may well be different.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0378377483900756

"Probable effects of increasing global atmospheric CO2 concentration on crop yield, crop water use, and world climate are discussed. About 430 observations of the yields of 37 plant species grown with CO2 enrichment were extracted from the literature and analyzed. CO2 enrichment increased agricultural weight yields by an 36%. Additional analysis of 81 experiments which had controlled CO2 concentrations showed that yields will probably increase by 33% with a doubling of atmospheric CO2 concentration. Another 46 observations of the effects of CO2 enrichment on transpiration were extracted and averaged. These data showed that a doubling of CO2 concentration could reduce transpiration by 34%, which combined with the yield increase, indicates that water use efficiency may double."

This could all bring about change in the next few years. I reckon support for green parties will rocket.

I hope so but I’m not holding my breath.

Most people seem happy to continue with their lives as before, doing their bit of recycling but rarely a thought about the impact of their cheap flights to holidays in the sun

I dunno. Covid was like that until people started seeing footage from Italian hospitals.

People will have come back from Rhodes and the Canaries this year with genuine horror stories.

"Alternative view points" to reality.

Got to love a bit of Spy Bee nonsense first thing in the morning. Obviously there's no evidence of extremes of weather apart from the actual extremes of weather.

What a crank.
