My instinct is that they were saying to the ref that they don't know whether van Dijk should be given off or not so he should have a look and decide. Bizarre

They were checking whether he thought the defender deflected the ball or not, surely. Otherwise it's not a matter of interpretation.

It did happen the other week and still no idea why.  It was Forest vs Newcastle (not us as I suggested earlier, but I did know it was a match I took some interest in).
