Because Matip's so softly spoken and he doesn't actively seek the spotlight, and defintely because he plays next to the best centre half in the world, his quality consistently gets overlooked. It shouldn't because Joel is one of the 5 best centre backs in the world I'd guess.

 

He is the Neven Subotic to Mats Hummels at Klopp's Dortmund...only  better.

He was here a couple of years before VVD. You could argue he's only shown this form consistently since VVD.

Agreed. Not at this level though.

 

You won't find anyone claiming he's one of the best defenders in the league prior to VVD arriving.

Sami started from the off and probably missed maybe a half dozen league games in his first 6 seasons.
