I agree with you regarding film and music. The problem is that almost every "big film", or band/artist on the radio, is shite, so you do have to dig for it. But it is there, fucking loads of it, especially if you aren't limiting yourself to just American and British films and music.

Not sure I agree regarding TV, but then for me it's not really a case that stuff used to be a lot better, I just don't find many programs particularly interesting/entertaining/funny.

Fair enough. I don't think I try particularly hard to root for decent stuff and still manage to find plenty, hence it usually (obviously not always) says more about the person saying it that the actual availability of good stuff.

See: "Everything since Oasis has been fucking shit!"

Yes Liam. Now shut up and go and listen to your three Beatles records, yeah? There's a good boy.

I'm too busy digging about looking for old music to look for the good new stuff, I don't really like modern production values anyway so when I do hear something new I like, I tend not to like the drum or bass sound on it anyway & with very few exceptions I don't like electronic music.

I think the fact that the mainstream in most arts tends to be saturated with shite tends to put people off as well, it would make a difference if there was the odd big film or song in the charts that was really good, there's not so it becomes easy to generalise & to call everything shit.

David Hepworth's book - 1971 - Never a Dull Moment - is a good read. His assertion is that no year before or since has been more important  in terms of the quality of music and its influence.  I'm not saying I agree, but he puts a strong (and amusing) case forward.

I genuinely wouldn't be able to tell you who half of the big mainstream acts are though. My entertainment viewing/searching habits just don't cross paths with loads of them.

Aye, I realise that, I was really just trying to work out why we get so many people saying 'modern music is shit' or something similar & it's because all of the music you hear everywhere you go (ie  - the chart stuff) is crap. If you dig like you do then you'll find there's a lot of diversity & a lot of talented people about.

I don't have the inclination personally because I'm so caught up in the 70s stuff & buy probably a couple of albums a month on average from that era.

Well surely this is an entirely subjective judgement as to what constitutes "good stuff"?
