what happened to el zhar and damien plesis they were looking like they had great futures ahead of them especially el zhar i would like to see him start against west brom when we play them give the young ones a chance when you dont need your main player with have some great young talents that dont get to show what there made of i think nemeth would probs score a few if he got chance to i know its wrong to rest key players in matches but how else can they prove them selves just slowly introduce them in to the team after all if we get a few unfortunate injurys who will step up

Good 3 points we don't seem to be doing it the easy way as usual, but I'm sure we'll give someone a good hiding sooner or later! As for the Lucas debate well I'm afraid I've seen nothing in him to convince me he is good enough for Liverpool, he looks incredibly average and gives the team nothing, I hope to be proved wrong but he has had more than a few games for us and not once has he taken the game by the scruff of the neck, he seems content to hide in the shadows.

Just got back from the game. Pennant was shit. Lucas was OK. I don't understand how people can criticise the inclusion of Sami since the team obviously prepared for Pompey playinig 4-5-1 and I give credit to Rafa for predicting that Defoe wouldn't play thus Sami played. Sami was boss in the match. Kuyt was excellent 1st half, 1st half was much better from the team and Yossi takes one too many touches. Our freekicks were shit, the passing was superb and the players all looked very tired.

I take it from the last couple of posts that this thread is full of moaning. Admittedly I've only seen the 50 minute highlights on Sky, but it struck me as a case of job done. We needed to rest players and we did so whilst still beating Pompey. We were comfortable at the back and made quite a few chances which, when you consider the fact that most of our first choice attack was missing, was good. Three points in the bag, bring on Harry's new boys.

I didn't really have any problems with the starting line up last night as certain players needed to be rested but I thought we were crying out for a striker to be on the pitch in the 2nd half. We effectively had Kuyt and Gerrard up front, both of whom I consider to be midfielders. Kuyt's natural game is to drop deep which is fine when he plays up front with someone who will play on the shoulder of the centre backs. When Gerrard plays so far forward it neutralises him, as he's at his best coming from deep and getting into the box that way. Last night he spent too much time with his back to goal. I don't mind the fact that Rafa started like that but it didn't work and I thought he should have put Babel upfront, or put Keane on earlier (although I understand why he didn't want to play Keane).

The substitutions amazed me, Benayoun for Pennant and Riera for Babel were effectively like for like changes when I felt the system desperately needed changing. Also, after getting a goal and with us hanging on at the end, why take Gerrard off for Keane? Fair enough put Keane on but it had to be for Kuyt, Gerrard is our best player and along with Carra is the player I'd most want on the field when we're defending a one goal advantage. Is Stevie going to benefit from a 3 minute rest at the end of the game? I don't think so.

As for Lucas, the game just passed him by. His defending was pretty much non existant due to his reading of the game not being good enough. Portsmouth seemed to run rings round him in centre all game. Players like Alonso, Mascherano and Lassana Diarra (who I thought was fantastic last night) read the game much better and anticipate the game better than Lucas and get themselves into better positions defensively as a result.

Overall we have to be happy with the 3 points, especially considering that we rested players but I can't wait until Torres and Keane are both fully fit.

If we scored in the first half like we should have with all the possesion we had we would of won easy. We didn't play bad at all we just didn't find the breakthrough and the longer it goes on like that the harder it gets to score.

We really need to start scoring early in matches and make life easier, we started off with a great tempo and had some good chances but then when we don't score the tempo gets slower and slower until the last 20 minutes when they realise it's getting desperate.

A bit more quality in front of goal and we will be beating teams easy, Torres coming back should give us that.

Disagree there. I thought we were poor in possesion at times, and although Babel had a few good moments he didn't help regarding our composure.

Now I didn't think the changes made much difference, but the intention was right on.

Made hard work of it, but all that matters is the win. Portsmouth defended really well, our team was a bit unbalanced. I'd not bother with Babel on the left anymore. If Riera needs a rest play Yossi there. Let Babel prove himself up front, its a waste of time playing him on the left.

Diarra is a good player. Never gave Gerrard any peace.

No idea what the fuck we were doing in the last 5/10 minutes. Every player seemed to be shitting themselves.

Finally, if you were one of the lads who pushed my car out of the mud in the St. Francis de Sales car park - thanks. I could still be there now. If you were the bloke who said no because you didn't want to get your jeans mucky, I hope you had a horrific accident on the way home and pissed yourself.

That's a match we would have drawn last year, so I'm well happy. I think that if we take it as read that Rafa was going to rest players we'd have all picked a different team to each other, let alone Rafa. Lucas and Alonso didn't seem to gel in the middle, and Pennant looked like a player who hasn't had a lot of matches this season.

All in all though, a good win and 3 points in the bag... with a few of our top players having a rest. Job done.

I am absolutely convinced Hyypia will play tommorrow.

Absolutely convinced. Especially after hearing Rafa mention how Crouch worries him.

I also guarantee there will be at least 3 changes to the team. Probably Lucas and Benayoun also stepping in too.

I'm blowing me own trumpet here but I was close weren't I?

What the hell were Adams' subs about. Go 1-0 down, bring off the most effective midfielder and bring on another midfielder. Then wait another 5 minutes to bring on Defoe, who is the team's top scorer. Bizarre.

Diarra was easily the most effective midfielder on the pitch. He won't be there much longer.
