It's not that many seasons ago that we had nothing much to cheer about. No season left to speak of at this time of year, and nothing to sit, watch, hope and cheer and shit ourselves about.

Before the doom and gloom sets in, and before the depressingly inevitable recriminations, let us give thanks to Rafael Benitez. I am gutted, and I am down, but tomorrow as the haze lifts, I will look back and think that once again we made our mark on the biggest stage that for so long we weren't even bit part players on.

As Fernando's goal went in, I got text messages from mates in London, Manchester, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Australia all saying the same thing. Get the fuck in, Liverpool! Well done! Come on!

So this time we didn't make it. Indeed, you can't win them all.

What we can say for sure though is that our manager did not have to win tonight for his us, his fans, to appreciate what he has done for us.

It's been yet another rollercoaster ride, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks Rafa.

ah Noos, maybe worth taking care of that heart of yours after all... ;)

It´s just a couple of seasons ago that Riise was one of the best players at the club. Now he´s the worst in the squad, bar Voronin. I think that says it all, thanks Rafa. Continue the good work please.

Since when has Johnny been one of the best players at the club? He's been walking the gangplank since Rafa joined.

The wonderful world of mad, mad, mad Jens.

Well, it´s not that long ago he was the highest-scoring player in the squad, next to Owen and Gerrard.

Just do one, eh?

Who is this Noos fella and where does he hide the rest of the season? He talks sense.

The wine has worn off (and it's a few hours before I can really justify having any more) and I feel strangely serene. The sun still rose and I am still a Liverpool fan. I wouldn't wish it any other way.

Before the game yesterday I was pondering how Rafa has put the excitement back into supporting Liverpool. How many big games have we been privileged to be part of! Istanbul was as pivotal a moment in our history as Rome 77. And now with one losing finalist appearance, a semi final narrow loss and kicking the Arse out, we're the best, most consistent CL team in Europe.

Totally agree with those sentiments he´s done a fantastic job with the team he inherited, if you look at the team now compared to the one he started with were light years better, unfortunately for him so are manu and Chelsea

Feel exactly the same as that. My overwhelming feeling last night (and now) was to be grateful for the opportunity to be disappointed. That's mad, I know, but that's how I feel. I am disappointed, but I don't have that 'spoilt child in a tantrum' feeling that has often accompanied defeat in the past (okay, I admit, I did startle the horses a little by chucking empty can of Kronenbourg at TV screen when they scored their 3rd - but other than that...).

Was thinking about this last night and I think the dawning of the enlightenment, the end of the dark ages, came for me when Houllier's team won 2-0 in Rome in Feb 2001. That was the first time in almost 10 years that I had felt any real sense of pride about european performance from us. It felt like a ray of light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel.

Despite this, when Rafa took over in 2004, nobody could have predicted what lay ahead. His love for the competition matches this club's history and the supporters' expectations. Few clubs are fortunate enough to have that.
