Transfer market Rafa vs Houllier

Rafa’s been heavily criticized on this site for his transfers. Here’s some facts:

Rafa:

Josemi in £2M, traded with Kromkamp, Kromkamp sold £2M

Morientes in £6M – sold £3M

Gonzales in £1M – sold £4M

Palleta in £2M – sold £2M

Bellamy in £6M – sold £7,5M

Then players that might be sold:

Crouch, £7M – ManCity prepared to pay £10M?

Carson, £1M – Villa prepared to pay £8M?

Momo, £5,5M – Italians willing to pay £7-8M?

Total: Lost money on some, gained on others. Looks like a small gain when Carson’s sold.

Houllier:

Diouf inn £10 M – sold £3,5M

Cisse inn £14M – sold £6M

I could go on with Cheyrou, gems etc., but there’s no need.

The big signings (£10m+) brought in by Rafa who’s still here:

Alonso £10,5M – worth every penny

Babel £11M – looks very promising, too early to judge

Torres £18M – Biggest bargain since Keegan?

The point is: From a financial point of view, Houllier was a disaster. Rafa’s been doing quite well.

Houllier took Kewell but nobody could have foreseen what was going to happen to him with his injury record. People mention Rafa's spending but if you sold the players he's bought, he might actually end up break even or at a profit. The Mancs would end up with a massive profit. Arsenal bigger still.

Apart from Torres I dont think there's much difference TBH.

Benitez has bought a few more duds than you alude to while Houllier bought some good players too.

Defensive signings were/have been superb by both .

H&H,Finnan,Risse, pre fuck up dudek and hamman etc in their pomp are arguably as good as what Benitez has brought in.

Both managers attcking purchases were/are atrocious though.Thenagain ,they are both similar in their football outlook.,both very/overly defensive

The ideal soloution is get Roy back as Benitez's assistant to but some attacking players and have a manager for each half of the field .Roys on charge of the attackers ,and Rafa gets the control he strives for from the back

Looking at those numbers Im staggered but not by the prices but by the sheer volume of players in and out. Rafa has bought 45 players? Jesus tonight.

Yeah, GH made some great signings. Babbel, Hyypia, Hamann, McAllister. Would be his best i reckon.

Out of those Babel and McAllister came for free. Quite fantastic to land those players for around 11 million or so in total.

But if you look at GH's big buys vs Rafa's it's a no contest.

Diouf, Cisse, Heskey.

vs

Alonso, Babel, Torres

Considering both are still starters this week surely Risse and Finnan should also be added to the list

That's not actually a mathematically fair comparison. Houllier sold some of Evans' players, Rafa sold some of Houllier's players. In order to gain a fair comparison of transfer market ability, you'd have to compare the players bought by Houllier and how much these players sold for, this would include figures from some of Rafa's sales. You'd not be able to do a 100 percent like-for-like comparison because a few Houllier's players are still here and loads of Rafa's.

No one has said the £130m was spent with the sole intention of the league. That net outlay has seen 1 CL, 1 UEFA Cup, 2 FA Cups and a couple of League Cups. And Im not including CL or LC final defeats.

The league is what this club is all about.

In that case, you couldnt do a comparison until Benitez stopped buying player ie after he left. In any event, Benitez has the benefit of a huge inflation in transfer fees. We may make some money on his potential outgoings such as Crouch or Pennant. This has come about due to the influx of new tv money not Benitez's accumen in the transfer market.

Therefore, the way current way is the only fair way.
