Any chance he's going to be out for a month or so? I wouldn't mind him not playing at Anfield...

Build-up to the season hampered by broken toe

Chelsea captain buoyed by new sense of unity

Chelsea's pre-season preparations have been disrupted after it emerged that John Terry broke a toe in his right foot during Tuesday night's friendly victory over the Korean side Suwon Bluewings in California, an injury which will prompt concern among the England set-up ahead of the national team's crucial autumn fixtures.

A scan revealed the break following Chelsea's 1-0 win and the Premiership club's medical staff were assessing the fracture last night with initial indications suggesting the problem may not be as serious as first feared, though it remains untimely given Terry's injury setbacks last season. The England captain suffered a serious back complaint which ruled him out for almost two months at the turn of the year, and has endured toe problems in the past, most notably at the end of the 2004-05 season which caused him to miss the national team's post-season tour to the United States.

It remains to be seen how seriously the Chelsea captain's build-up to the season is affected - the club remain hopeful that he could feature in their friendly against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, albeit after a pain-killing injection - though it is a concern that his preparations have been hampered. That anxiety will be shared by the England manager, Steve McClaren, whose team face Germany in a friendly next month prior to their last five Euro 2008 qualifying fixtures.

England S.O.S for Carragher

Last updated at 23:01pm on 5th August 2007 - Daily Mail

Steve McClaren will try to persuade Liverpool's Jamie Carragher to come out of international retirement after John Terry was last night ruled out for the first month of Chelsea's season with damaged medial knee ligaments.

Terry sat out yesterday's Community Shield, which Manchester United won 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, having suffered the injury in training on Saturday. He fears he will miss England's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month.

The England skipper has already been ruled out of the friendly against Germany on August 22 and his absence from two crucial qualification games will cause huge concern in the England camp. There was some better news for McClaren, however, when Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce said Michael Owen could be fit for the Germany match after all.

But McClaren's priority will be to settle on his defensive line-up as he will definitely be without Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King against Germany. Although Rio Ferdinand will be fit, the Manchester United defender is the only senior centre half in the squad.

McClaren, who will speak to Terry about his injury today, has alternatives in the shape of Tottenham defender Michael Dawson, Manchester City's Micah Richards or Newcastle's Steven Taylor, but that will leave him short of experience.

The England coach has twice spoken to Carragher since he made his decision to quit international football and is hopeful that he can persuade the outstanding Liverpool defender to answer a crisis call for his country.

Carragher became disillusioned when McClaren forced him to play at right back against Brazil in May and was then left out of the team altogether when England travelled to Estonia in June.

The 29-year-old announced his decision to quit last month, but McClaren hopes he can engineer a U-turn and that Carragher will agree to come back against the Germans and then play alongside Ferdinand in the qualifiers on September 8 and 12.

Although Owen will miss the start of Newcastle's season because of a damaged thigh muscle, Allardyce said: 'Perhaps he won't be ruled out of the England friendly, which could be a good thing for us.

'He will be back in training this week and by the end of next week he could play a reserve game, get involved in a game with us and then get another game with England under his belt.'

I hope he tells Bungle to fuck right off- he didn't want him when he knew he had him available.

England fuckin piss me off. Tell him to shove it Carra and play for somebody who wants you.

It would raise a grin if Carra did tell him to shove it. I doubt he will though, Carra's not the sort to let someone down when they are in a tight spot, even if it is only England.

Aye, even if Carra does play, he'll be better than Ferdinand, then Terry will be straight back in with Carra dropped. What's the point?

Two must win games for the Ingurland faithful or they don't quallify. Carra plays, England don't concede and win them both - Carra's point well and truly made - then he tells them to fuck off and leave him alone cos he's got better things to do with his time - highly satisfying for Carra I'd imagine.

Now they appreciate him.

Still, can't see him saying no as he'll be made the scapegoat when they lose.

Saying that, he'll get the blame if he plays and they lose, so no win situation.

Yep, that's sort of what I am expecting.
