Bowie was selling out stadiums throughout the world in the 80s

so was springsteen for example and nobody loves springsteen more than me, but i am not sure he should be in the final (although I would have him before dylan certainly and maybe bowie). The impact of Jackson I think gets massively under estimated, he was selling beyond selling stadium (as I said the likes of Aintree racecource), he was playing beyond stadiums for multiple days when he was touring. he pretty much defined the entire MTV culture. Jackson was completely omnipresent, there was no walk of life where you wouldn't see or hear from him.

It's clear I won't win this argument on here, it's why Bowie is in the final. I stick to my view before though, he's the middle aged whiteman's hipster choice.

It's a middle aged white man's hipster forum.

I must admit a reverence of Jackson on here has been a revelatione, I thought he was finished 20 years ago, except with the hardcore fans and quite honestly, even in his heyday I never met anyone who would admit buying his records beyond the age of 15. I know he was a megaseller, but so was Meatloaf. Is this a posthumous thing or was he constantly held in such high regard?

@Mook, what were the elements of his influence, the only thing I remember hearing about was that base on Billie Jean? Surely people were singing and dancing and making hugely expensive videos before him too?

I have never like Jackson's music beyond the Jackson 5 and admit that I too thought his music was aimed towards the younger listener.

In the late 70s we were in the car going to the mates by the ground, all blitzed, at a time I was into the usual of the Doobies, JJ Cale, Steely Dan etc, when Don't Stop came on the radio and I thought that's a decent sound and different but that's about it, I still like it but as good as his next albums were, not for me.

I’ve never heard of the term “retro hipster”, but nostalgia is mainstream nowadays, I suppose. Personally, I’ve been living in the past since I was about sixteen.

I just made it up.

You are right, it is not a hipster forum. It's fairly mainstream in its tastes and leaning towards middle aged. Some of the nominations are a bit baffling though.
