I think it probably only stops when the left gives up and fucks off and everyone just accepts that the Labour party is a centrist party. Change the "Democratic Socialist" bit on the membership card, etc. Maybe just replace it with a picture of Peter Mandelson.

Obviously it would guarantee decades of Tory governments, which looks fairly likely anyway in all fairness.

The Labour party has gone from something to be hated or laughed at to something no-one gives a fuck about any more. They're becoming the Lib Dems.

Not sure about the last line (they won’t go full tory) but the rest is spot on.

In the Lib Dems defence they wouldn't have ministers talking about drowning refugees or a leader in the middle of a pandemic talking about letting the bodies pile up. They're not sociopaths.

They're just empty suits, or people fighting ferociously for nothing to change. And it's this that they have in common with much of the Labour party. They inspire apathy.

Can you see Labour entering into a coalition with them though ….?

With the Tories? Well, no. Although I doubt the dynamic would never get so bad for Labour that they become such a miniscule party that they'd simply leap at the chance of any sniff of power. Even if it essentially meant being David Cameron's gopher. Exchanging the enormous win of getting supermarkets to charge 5p for plastic bags with sending tens of thousands of vulnerable people to an early grave.

However, I could see them going into coalition with each other and it's probably the best people can hope for now. As utterly uninspiring a prospect as it would be.

Nick Clegg certainly seems to have done well out of it. Swapping dinner parties with George Osborne to pumping out propaganda for Mark Zuckerberg.

Really is quite tragic what has happened to that party post Charles Kennedy. They were a proper alternative for people who thought Blair was/is a fucking cunt.

If "they" wanted to re-create New Labour then Starmer is a poor choice.

But I don't think that's why he won the leadership. I think the hope was that he was a smart, in words and looks, left-winger at heart but that has proven not to be the case. It seems the party under his leadership wants to distance itself from the left by moving further to the right, but Starmer simply does not have the charisma or personality to take people with him.

A disastrous choice so far.

The hope for who though?

I think for those whose only interest was wrestling back control of the party the hope was that he would be an empty vessel. Job done.

Quite different for the membership of course. Didn't help that Long-Bailey was such an atrocious option from the left that many who might actually consider themselves socialists voted for Starmer.

Talking of Unite I was at Tony Benn House yesterday to try to sort of some fairly minor issues, no answer from the front door bell. Decided to pop over the road to an old haunt named after some old fella who wrote a few plays back in the day, god only knows why in the 17th century they named pubs after these people.

https://www.yeshakespearebristol.co.uk/

Anyway on telling the barman of my plight he responded 'ah, them lot are always out the back room' 'great'I replied 'they out there now?' '"No" he answered.

Not the most exciting story I admit, sorry, as you were..

I’ve just accepted a job for a company who had Clegg as Chair of their advisory board when they were caught out putting fake reviews on trust pilot and…yeah, you guessed it. Facebook.

Also had to meet a fella in the Hatchet, right next to the concert hall, The Benn union building not so welcoming though, had an election on their minds apparently, never mind.

Now that is good pub. They reckon The Hatchet is the oldest pub in Bristol.

Back when we were at college it was a gay friendly pub. You used to get a weird mix of hairy gay bikers, lipstick lesbians and pisshead students in there on a Friday/Saturday evening taking advantage of the £1.50 a pint/bottle/double offer before we then went clubbing.

Had many a great night in there.
