I agree, and it also doesn't show that much faith in Jay

if this was going to effect Jay then it would've been him loaned out not Jonjo

I think Kenny rates Jay it is just Lucas is the best dm in the league at the moment and we're good enough not to need to play 2 defensive midfielders unlike last season

Wonder if Shelvey will be used in the Nextgen to boost that side now they are in the knock out stages?

Do we actually know who they have yet in that competition?

Watched highlights of the reserve game last week. Shelvey absolutely bossed the game, scored two free kicks, set up a couple too. He also looked like he has bulked up a fair bit, I was surprised by how physically imposing he was. Looks like the loan spell has done him the world of good.

He is going to be a quality player for us.

I really like Shelvey, always have since we bought him.

He is a confident guy and I think you have to have that to be a success at this club. I also saw him for the reserves with his two goals and he looked really good.

Hope he gets some chances over the next few weeks. He has a bright future.

Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey wins League's young player award

Shelvey wins young player award

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has set his sights on a first-team spot at Anfield after winning the Football League's young player of the month award while on loan at Blackpool.

The 19-year-old won November's award after scoring four goals in five games.

"I have got to try to force my way into the Liverpool team and stay there," Shelvey said. "I feel this is a good chance for me to kick on.

"Being at Blackpool has helped get me back into Liverpool's plans."

Shelvey was recalled by the Reds at the end of November after a season-ending injury to Lucas Leiva and played for three minutes as a substitute at the end of Saturday's victory over QPR.

Shelvey says the last award he won was for a golf tournament in Liverpool shortly after moving to Anfield in May 2010

With Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard still on the sidelines and midfielder Jay Spearing missing the next two games through suspension, Essex-born Shelvey is keen to make the most of the opportunity.

The former Charlton man, who joined Liverpool for an initial £1.7m in May 2010, added: "There is only so much I can do on and off the pitch - selection is down to [manager] Kenny Dalglish but, if he does come calling, I will be ready - and hopefully I can take my chance.

"I think that going out on loan has helped me get my confidence back up and I think I am showing that in training back here."

Shelvey made the loan move to the Seasiders at the end of September after asking Dalglish if he could leave Anfield temporarily in search of first-team football.

"When you are not playing at Liverpool it gets you down, and you sometimes need to go away and play games," he said.

He scored six goals in 10 games during the full spell, including a hat-trick in a stunning 5-0 win at Leeds.

And he is adamant his spell at Bloomfield Road also helped him sharpen his match fitness after finding his route to the first team at Anfield blocked.

Still only 19, the midfielder made his Charlton debut against Barnsley aged 16 years and 59 days in April 2008

The youngest player to score for Charlton with an FA Cup goal against Norwich in January 2009 - 55 days before he turned 17

Bought by Liverpool in May 2010 for an initial £1.7m

Loaned to Blackpool on 30 September, scoring six goals in 10 games

Has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U21 level

Shelvey said: "Every time you play you get sharper - it brings you half a yard closer to the ball and you no longer feel sluggish.

"Blackpool is a great club to play for and the attacking way they play suited me down to the ground."

Seasiders boss Ian Holloway said Shelvey's performances for the Championship club had given everyone at the club a lift.

"He was fantastic," Holloway said. "He had a lot of frustration when he first came.

"I think he has all sorts of talent and will never lose that. Hopefully he will get the chance to use that and shine because he really suited us.

"The boy is good enough to play anywhere and in our system floating in off the right he was dynamic. He has gone a long way to giving us some confidence and making us realise we can win some games.

"I hope his career goes from strength to strength."

Liverpool play Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, marking the start of a sequence of five top-flight games in 16 days over the festive period.

Shelvey's only appearance this season prior to his loan move was as a late substitute in the 3-1 Carling Cup win at Exeter on 24 August.

He made 21 appearances during the 2010-11 season, but just four were starts and he failed to score.

Nice words from Holloway there. I haven't been that impressed with Shelvey to be honest; he's done okay but I haven't really seen anything special in him. He's only young though so he obviously has time on his side.

Going on loan to a Championship team and winning a player of the month award is impressive though isn't it? You can't ask for any more when you send a youngster out on loan.

I think he looks like a very good passer of the ball and, although he hasn't really shown it for us yet, he definitely seems to have an eye for goal. There is definitely some good raw material there, and I think that in a year or two he will be a very good player. Whether he'll be good enough to hold down a regular place in the centre of our midfield is another issue, but I definitely see him as a good Premiership player.

I'm going to put my head on the block and say that this kid will make it as a Liverpool player. I think he's got the attributes to make it, even if his lack of pace will be something for the critics to feast on. Looks really good on the ball, has great vision and passing range and doesn't shirk away from a challenge.

I think he is a good player and he will make it at Liverpool. He is confident, passes well and has an eye for goal. He is a bit like Henderson to my eyes, although Henderson is a bit further along having played more Premiership football. If we let the pair of them develop they will both do well for us for years to come.

Loans are really important for young players and Jonno has reaped the benefits

Who is Johnno you slobbering simpleton?

Jonjo was one of our best players yesterday IMO, he has gained alot of confidence from the loan spell with Blackpool and i think we have two of the best young Midfielders in the country in him and Hendo.

Liked him when he first came into the team lost his way a bit being in and out. Says himself that has an effect on his game.

Like what I saw yesterday. Remember the slide rule pass to Suarez against Fulham for Luis to score. He is a good passer , long and short, and good vision. It is easier to work on your finishing.

He's no slower than Whelan, Molby, Alonso or Hamann and he's faster than Adam and Murphy. I reckon he can make it in the Premier League either with us or a smaller team like Everton or Aston Villa
