Stewart Lees Comedy Vehicle

He's certainly hit and miss. And he has an inordinate amount of acolytes who won't hear a word against him. A lot of misplaced intellectual snobbery. But he can be very funny on occasion.

This

He does also seem to be a bit of a cunt.

And this seem to sum it up quite well.

Just seems like he picks really poor targets sometimes.

That's true. I think there's a fair amount of collateral damage once he's picked a topic too. He's clearly still hung up on the ideals of the alternative eighties scene, so I think that explains why he goes after someone like Watson, who he assumed had some kind of general stance to his comedy and was of that ilk.

Just listened to this.

I didn't realize that Lee was considered by other comedians to be the authoritative voice on what constitutes acceptable comedy. Watson seems like he was/is genuinely concerned by the reaction of Lee and Frankie Boyle. I find Boyle marginally amusing and Lee less so, but I would never have guessed that either were held in such esteem by anyone anywhere that their views could be so affecting.

Listened to Mark Watson's interview on the ComComPod podcast recently and it's pretty interesting to hear from someone that has been on the receiving end of Lee's acerbic wit (for the crime of doing an advert for Cider).

Love ComCom podcast.

I have a massive crush on her and him. He basically takes up a position of absurd moral superiority on every position knowing full well that he doesn't meet the impossible standards he sets himself. I was at a show of his once where he read out all his brutally negative press then he read out the comments sections' views on his fans with real vitriol, 'bed wetting asexual Morrissey fans' hit home. It's very uncomfortable but it is partly schtick. It's the self-hating fury of a man doing well - but not as well as he feels he ought to - in a society that he loathes. I can relate to that. His actual comedy is utter genius when he can be bothered sticking to that and not the experiments with form etc.

He's totally aware of the hypocrisy - denying allegations of being a champagne socialist by admitting to having been an 'amphetamine communist' in the 90's. It's the hypocrisy that anyone who hates the Tories but has ever cheated in a partner or stolen something or fiddled tgeir tax bill or whatever should and must feel. It's the absurdity of trying to be altruistic in a fundamentally corrupt society. It's an indictment on all of us for being part of that society.

And it's sometimes about crisps.

Or just not funny.

Stewart Lee is unashamedly elitist, taking aim at things that a lot of lesser mortals find popular, so it stands to reason that those who subsist on troughs of baked beans garnished with dead dogs may be put out occasionally by his observations. I would invest him as dictator of the UK in a heartbeat.

It's the music stuff that winds me up more than anything. She knows fuck all but goes on as if she's Charlie Parker or something.

Must be that whole spending her whole life either playing music or presenting shows about music thing that had given her the impression she's picked a few things up.

You must have some serious music knowledge mate.

'Playing music.'

Did you hear her fucking band?

And Jimmy Savile used to present a music show so you'll have to forgive me for not putting too much stock in that.

Don't think I'd try to claim I knew more about music than any of the 6 Music presenters. They all know their stuff.
