Bentley is better than Downing.

Very similar players in that they arent great at going past players but both have great delivery.

Downing edges it because he is not a cunt and handles himself better off the pitch hence why he is actually improving with age and Bentley is going backwards

The difference between Downing and Bentley, is that one of them performed well for 12 months, and the other has been performing well for more than 6 years.

Can't put it any simpler for you.

Even Benni McCarthy had one great season in this division, same with Roque Santa Cruz, one year does not maketh a great player, which of course is the danger with Adam as well, but we're not paying £18m for Adam, as City did with Santa Cruz, and Spurs paying £16m for Bentley.

Downing does not fall into this category, at all. He's worth a lot of money, some of you don't like that because you prefer every winger to be like Ronaldo or Nani, tons of step-overs and confidence oozing out of them.

Downing is not this prototype of winger, he's more in the McManaman mould, more like Chris Waddle, as opposed to Gazza or John Barnes, or Georgi Kinkladze.

He'll do a damn good job. For me, he's like a fit version of Harry Kewell.

There's a reason he cost Villa £12m, there's a reason he's got a load of England caps, there's a reason Kenny Dalglish wants him so bad, and there's a reason Alex McCleish is desperate to keep him. It's not because he's an average footballer, there's a clue for you.

The other thing to remember is that if we sign someone like Hazard, then it's going to be a problem for Sterling to see the light.

I think Downing offers us a chance to significantly boost the left side, but he's also at an age and has a great team ethic whereby he would be a great role-model for Sterling to develop alongside in the next two years.

Let's not kid ourselves, Sterling is the future, and the moment we put someone massive in his way then his agent is going to start texting the likes of Arsenal and inviting a bid.

So we should look to sign some boss young talent on the hope that a 16 year old kid that hasn't yet played for a ressies is deffo the real deal?

If he's as good as many believe he will be he'll make it whether we sign Hazard, or whoever, or not.

Top post that. Finally someone speaking a little sense. A lot of sense, actually.

Generalization at it's best ... Downing is certainly a better player at the moment, but he has not performed on a consistent level over the past 6 seasons ... In fact, he was very poor in his last season at 'Boro (2008/09), when they got relegated ... Bentley has disappeared at Tottenham, but he was very good for 3 seasons at Blackburn ... In fact, Bentley's last season at Blackburn (2007/08.) was better than anything that Downing has shown in the PL so far ...

yes, it would be crazy not to see and acknoledge what they have done this summer. He is a cloggy and so more than likely hell have no probs here. he is a truly excelllent signing, IMO. And espcially for for them and the way they wanna play. A real fucking storming signing for them, or anyone, for that matter. Jealous and angry now.
