An MP used his maiden speech in the House of Commons to label Liverpool's American owners "asset strippers".

Former Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram is now the MP for Liverpool Walton and spoke passionately about how the actions of George Gillett and Tom Hicks have "threatened the clubs existence" and failed "to exercise responsible stewardship of the club".

Rotheram is an Anfield season ticket holder as well as representing the constituency the stadium falls under and recently tabled an Early Day Motion expressing his dismay at the current regime after they refused to adhere to promises to not burden the club with debt.

Despite Rotheram confessing that he was a "dyed-in-the-wool" Reds fan, he said: "I would honestly say the same things if it was Everton FC that had been the victim of a leverage buyout that endangered its future survival and which has caused so many problems for my constituents living in close proximity to the football stadium.

"England's most successful football club is slowly being drained by the greed of two American asset strippers and this is having a negative impact on regeneration projects for the whole area.

"Unfortunately the beautiful game does not always attract those with beautiful intentions."

Liverpool current debts exceed £351million following the takeover by Gillett and Hicks in February 2007.

He's my local MP.

He's alright is Steve.

Thanks for bringing it up.

I still think we should target the chancellor with an email campaign.
