Both are supoib singers but Marvin had the better tunes, plus he had some fucked up life, got fucked over first by Berry Gordy, then a series of "friends" who were only interested in selling him coke, then shot by his father (who was apparently a cross dressing god fearing motherfucker), one of the few cool things about belgium is the dude lived there for a while.

 

Curtis Mayfield also deserves a shout out for some brilliant tuneage, and also had a pretty fucked up life.

And there was me thinking I was the only soul boy on the forum.

 

Love my Northern, love my Philly and one of my top 5 songs of all time is 'What's Going On' by big Marv. The album of the same name is a classic. Soaring strings, kicked back sax and his amazing voice flow like musical velvet. The backdrop of the Vietnam war, urban decay and racial intolerance make it as relevant now as it was then.

I remember getting this on a mix CD from some foxy woman who liked a bit of retro soul. Great tune, and got that 'fingernail down a comb' percussion that if memory serves me right is see on the 'What's Going On' album. Spotters badge to whoever comes up with the song/s it's used on.
