Depends who wins the election, if republicans get in again all bets are off. They are psychopaths, they are also incompetent and evangelical in their belief of their own supremacy. A land invasion of Iran would be devastating

I wouldn't write anything off these days. A lot of leaders are in their twilight years and narcissistic to boot.

Yeah, I think it might also be politically difficult for Trump. He made a big thing of not being an interventionist hawk and the US no longer being the 'world's policeman' during the election. He's a lying shithouse though, so it depends how much money can be made and whether Iran decide to be too provocative I guess.

Such a mental cunt, is Bolton. That said, fortunately, he's not the only one who counts. They wouldn't do it unilaterally anyway.

I couldn't see a land war but they could bomb the fuck out of them and any retaliation would probably be carried out on allies in the area like Saudi Arabia. Don't think Israel would need much encouragement to strategically bomb them either.

Agreed, I just can't see it either. It would take some serious mentalism to go to war with them.

Well, there's the problem...

I think our best hope is that Cadet Bonespurs doesn’t have the attention span to sustain the build-up to war.

What a time to be alive.

The response would be devastating. If people are under the illusion that they can bomb parts of Iran and walk away with a few bombs to close neighbours, they’re out of their minds. It would start a war and global financial collapse like none of us have ever seen before.

A few days ago: the sophisticated nature of the attack leads experts to believe that the Iranians were responsible.

Today: Mr Kido, an explosives expert, added that navy investigators have recovered fingerprints and a hand print from the side of the ship after the attack.

Iran. Who proves that you don't need to leave fingerprints to be sophisticated, but they are sophisticated. Sophisticated without being sophisticated.

Remember the time the SAS stormed the embassy and the bloke got his ropes twisted and dangled in the wind?  Then set to the place by accident?  It’s not a film.

It actually did go pretty well, they defeated the Iraqi army in what, less than a month, losing fewer than 150 people? The problems came later. Iran is, surprisingly, ethnically relatively diverse, so if you want to facilitate an aggressive regime change, it would make sense to use its internal weaknesses, rather than try a ground offensive. If they are indeed behind the attacks on tankers (and they may well be) it means the sanctions are hurting them pretty badly so it would be more likely the US would keep tightening that screw and work with malcontents.

Starting with sanctions, working with malcontents and relying on internal weaknesses were all tried in Iraq. Nevertheless, as you so delicately put it, "the problems came later".

If the US objective in Iran is (as Bolton has proclaimed) regime change, then a military attack - either in the form of bombardment or boots on the ground  - would not just be illegal, it would also be counterproductive, as Iranians, whatever else divides them, have known the US is their common enemy for 40 years.
