1000 th Premiership Goal on Way

Liverpool's next Premiership goal will be their 1000th.

 

So far Liverpool's Premiership record reads 626 games. Home: 195 wins - 73 draws - 45 defeats, 591 goals scored, 243 goals against. Away: 115 wins - 86 draws - 112 defeats, 408 goals scored, 366 goals against.

 

Stat expert, Alex, has highlighted three sets of records, quite interesting in their own right.

 

Liverpool Premiership Records vs:

 

Champions: P32 W6 D6 L20 F35 A56 (Won 18.75%)

Relegated Sides: P98 W65 D23 L10 F217 A79 (Won 66.33%)

Newly Promoted Sides: P95 W58 D23 L14 F186 L79 (Won 61.05%)

 

They are of interest because you might expect a much better record against the sides just promoted and those that get relegated. They include this season's draw against Stoke who may get relegated but only their newly promoted status is definite.

 

Another stat that came out of this, of interest to fans of promoted sides more than Liverpool fans, is that of the 98 sides relegated 46 were newly promoted, so 46.94% of all sides promoted to the Premiership in the previous sixteen seasons have been relegated straight back down again.

 

The last time all three promoted sides went down was 97/98 - Bolton, Crystal Palace & Barnsley all went straight back down. The last time none of the promoted sides were relegated was 01/02 - Blackburn, Bolton & Fulham came up, and Leicester City, Derby County & Ipswich Town went down.

 

One statistic of note as well is that the only side Liverpool has a 100% record against in the Premiership is West Brom. Against some of the one-off and rarer visitors to the Premiership, our record is far from flawless. Against Wolves, Swindon Town, Reading, Watford, Stoke City, Barnsley and Bradford City our Premiership record is P19 W12 D3 L4 F33 A16. All seven have managed at least a draw against us despite none spending more than two seasons in the top flight. I excluded Oldham because they had stayed up three seasons, promoted in 90/91, although they floated just about above the relegation zone the whole time. We won three and lost one of the four Premiership fixtures against Oldham, scoring eight and conceding four.

 

Best achievement in the Premiership in a calendar year

 

This calendar year, Liverpool has lost just two Premiership matches vs West Ham in January and Man. Utd in March. It is only September, and there is a long way to go until the end of 2008, but it's still pretty impressive. The least Liverpool's lost in a calendar year in the Premiership is six - 1996 (39 games), 2001 (37 games) and 2007 (36 games). All of those are around one defeat in six, at the moment in 2008 Liverpool is losing around one in twelve.

 

2006 was Liverpool's most Premiership points in a calendar year with 79. The Reds are currently on 53 for 2008 with 14 Premiership fixtures scheduled before the end of December (42 points).

Another interesting and coincidental milestone could be reached against PSV, when the 100th goal in Rafa's reign may be scored. Strange how the two have arrived at the same time. It would be low odds on Gerrard to score in either and bring up his 100th, but scoring in either would be fitting. Personally, I would prefer him to make the European double hundred, and for Torres to score the 1000th League goal.
