My most favouritist player in the history of everything. That QPR goal is quite special too.

That was from the days when I was a kop regular, so it holds a special place in my heart. As soon as barnes got the ball you would be moved at least 10 feet forward.

He spoke at our prize-giving at the end of term for the second time in five years. We'd been let down by some Tranmere youth team player and my boss still had Digger's phone number from the last time he came, so gave it a whirl. With about three days notice, he happily agreed and came to present prizes. As it was such short notice, we didn't ask him to speak, but he said he couldn't not say something and then proceeded to deliver a highly relevant, witty, self-deprecating and motivational speech, without notes, for about fifteen minutes. He was brilliant. He then posed for photos and signed autographs for ages afterwards. He was introduced with the words, "People say Thierry Henry was worth £50m at his peak. Well what price a young John Barnes in today's market?" I couldn't agree more. He was an incredible player - and is a great bloke.

Digger is the reason I support this club and was my childhood hero. However it was recently pointed out to me what his name rhymes with and I hadn't even realised this in getting on for 20 years! Does it rhyme on purpose or something fucked up like that?

From wiki:

Barnes, like everyone else at Anfield, was given a nickname, what with Dallas being one of the leading TV programmes of the time and one of the characters names being Digger Barnes, it was an easy call to give him the nickname 'Digger,' this has stuck with him and is also how the Liverpool fans affectionately refer to him.

He was a fantastic player and person he used to live above the dentist's on Priory road, many a time we used to see him early morning and he always let on he even signed an autograph for me at 7.15am and wasn't put out the slightest.

he used to give us a tenner for chips to carry his diadora stuff from his car to that flat , we used to sit on those steps then digger moved in , quality times on townsend lane
