I have randomised the 16 funniest sitcoms of all time and will post a knockout tie everyday until we have a final and winner.

Sorry if I have missed some personal favourites off but I thin the vast majority will be happy with the selections. The winner of each tie is the leader 24 hours after the tie is posted.

Round 1

Dads Army

Whilst a bit fluffy for my liking, I appreciate Dad's Army more as I get older. Beneath the simple slapstick and catchphrases, there's a decent satire on the British character. Arthur Lowe played the quintessential middle-management pompous twat.

Yep

Only started watching it 3 or 4 years ago. Personally I think it's brilliant. It's obviously a different type of comedy than what you get today, with it being a family show of the era.

But the characters are well done, some great episodes especially the Branded(Season 3 Episode 11) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branded_(Dad's_Army)

It's weird, because it was always on when I was a kid - and mainly on Sundays too, so I associated it with going back to school - I kind of grew to dislike it, without ever giving it a chance.

Watching it fresh years later was completely different. A bit like how I've come to appreciate stuff like One Foot in the Grave. I used to see Victor Meldrew as the old git, now I see him as the hero.

Personally I don't even see this as close. Nobody will still be watching MBB, it was a show of its era and won't be talked about. Dad's army was first screened 58 years ago and must still get enough numbers that the BBC still show a episode or two most weeks

I like alot of that stuff myself.

I do associate most of it with being you g and watching terrestrial TV on the weekends. And while it's probably not as funny as alot of modern stuff its worth remembering how long this stuff has aired and that they were made for a family audience of the 60-90s. They didn't even have the lisence to go as far as say Fawlty towers which I love but going back there are some jokes you'd never get away with today

The main cast were great comic actors, Lowe and Mesurier in particular.  I could watch it every day.

Two ties in particular that have come up in the randomiser draw are absolute bastards.

I was going to say- horrendous draw for both comedies, they're both ace. It'd have to be MBB by a nose, mainly because of Allie Byrne in the Pornography episode.

MBB was shite when Harry Enfield was in it, much better with Neil Morrissey.

Still have to go for Dads Army though. Quintessential classic British comedy.

This.

Agree Morrissey was a huge improvement alright on Enfield.  I actually think George and Anthea ( think that was her name) were the 2 best characters in it.
