Temperament alone isn’t enough mind, you’ve got to have at least a solid technique. Ballance and Jennings for example are two players we’ve seen promoted for England recently who, I would say, have really good mentality but are woefully short technique-wise. Vince seems to be the opposite, he just can’t help indulging himself after a while.

Cook had/has about three shots. What set him apart in his peak was an almost perfect temperament.

But once he made his decision, I wouldn’t have picked him for this Test.

 

The series is. It in the balance. England could use this Test to try & find his replacement. Might need two new openers with Jennings not impressing.

 

If they want to appreciate Cook. They should have given him an appreciation or testimonial match.

 

For the best of English Cricket moving forward we should be blooding a new opener especially when the conditions seem favourable. Which is usual at The Oval.

 

I don’t like Buttler as a specialist batsman at 7 either. Can’t bowl, won’t keep wicket, can’t face the new ball - just bats with the tail.

 

Nah he either needs the gloves & let Bairstow who can bat in the top 6 focus on his batting or Buttler needs to be at in the Top 6 as Moeen Ali at 3 is surely just a stop gap.

 

Root being selfish & batting at 4 needs to stop too!

Agree with most of that in regards batting order, barring Root

 

He absolutely needs to remain selfish, he’s a No 4 test batsman, we need to find 3 people who can graft at the top of the order and stay in rather than him coming in in the 4th or 5th over of every innings

 

Otherwise the Stokes/Bairstow/Moeen middle order explosion can’t be effective as it was

Agree with most of that in regards batting order, barring Root

Doesn’t matter if he’s 3 or 4, he’s coming in early as the team are frequently 2 down.

 

Rather see him face the new ball as he’s going to be the best at doing it now Cook has gone.

Ideally he’s be 4. The England top order is far from ideal now Cook has gone & even he has been struggling.
